New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release

The New Orleans Zephyrs pitching staff combined to strikeout 14 batters, including eight from starter Darin Downs, to defeat the Reno Aces 4-0 on Sunday night at Zephyr Field.

The shutout victory was the Zephyrs league-leading 11th on the year. It was the first time Reno was shutout.

Downs (2-1), making his second start with the Zephyrs this season, pitched five innings, giving up no runs on two hits while striking out eight.

Downs helped out his cause by singling in the first run of the game, capitalizing on a leadoff double by Alex Romero to give the Z's a 1-0 lead in the third.

Jose Rosario took over the Downs in the sixth and worked three scoreless innings, allowing one hit while fanning four.

The Zephyrs extended the lead in the eighth on a three-run home run from Vinny Rottino to put New Orleans ahead 4-0.

Sandy Rosario pitched a perfect ninth to preserve the shutout victory.

Barry Enright (8-4) took the loss, pitching seven innings, giving up one run on three hits while striking out six.

The Zephyrs return to action on Monday night at 7 p.m. at Zephyr Field for the final game of the four-game set against the Reno Aces. Elih Villanueva (5-10) takes the mound for the Z's facing off against Reno's Kevin Mulvey.
