Yapi Scores in Rapids' Preseason Finale against Querétaro in MexicoÃÂ
January 29, 2023 - Major League Soccer (MLS) - Colorado Rapids News Release
The Colorado Rapids closed out their training camp in Mexico with a 120-minute scrimmage against Liga MX side Queretaro FC on Sunday. Darren Yapi scored his third goal of the preseason to put Colorado ahead during the regulation period, before Queretaro's Jose Raul Zuñiga and Kevin Escamilla scored in "extra time" to make the final result 3-1.
After a closely contested first half with few chances for either side, Yapi finally broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute, pouncing on a loose ball inside the box to slot home the first goal of the afternoon. The Rapids would carry this lead through the opening 90 minutes of the scrimmage.
The two sides opted to play an additional 30 minutes, which gave Colorado an opportunity to field Rapids 2 and academy players, such as U-17 goalkeeper Adam Beaudry, against the Mexican first-division side.
Four minutes into "extra time," Zuñiga equalized for Queretaro from a breakaway before Kevin Escamilla put Los Gallos Blancos ahead with a low, driven effort in the 105th minute. Zuñiga would complete his brace five minutes later to seal the result.
The Rapids will briefly return to Denver tomorrow before heading to Orlando, Florida, on February 5 for the second half of their preseason training camp. Colorado opens its 2023 MLS season on February 26 against Seattle Sounders FC.
