San Jose Earthquakes News Release

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Chris Wondolowski scored his third goal of the season as the San Jose Earthquakes drew 1-1 against Vancouver Whitecaps FC in front of a sellout crowd at Buck Shaw Stadium on Saturday.

San Jose (2-2-2, 8 pts.) found the scoreboard first, finally breaking through in the 18th minute after a series of dangerous chances to open the game. Wondolowski stole the ball in Vancouver's defensive third before Shea Salinas found Alan Gordon at the top of the box. Gordon deftly chipped a pass to Wondo on the run and the reigning Volkswagen MLS MVP buried his shot in the top shelf at the near post.

Vancouver (2-2-1, 7 pts.) would find an equalizer from Corey Hertzog in the 62nd minute. San Jose was playing down two men with Alan Gordon and Victor Bernardez waiting to be waived back to the field after switching cleats when Daigo Kobayashi's shot was deflected to the feet of Hertzog. The striker took a touch and then finished for the game's final goal.

The Earthquakes peppered Vancouver's goal to close the match and had several chances nearly find the net. Sam Cronin broke loose in stoppage time and beat Whitecaps FC goalkeeper Joe Cannon, but watched his shot hit the post. Wondolowsi found the rebound, but had his shot blocked by a defender on the doorstep. San Jose had four corner kicks in a row after that series; Dan Gargan had the best look during those spot kicks, heading a shot on target, but Cannon made a leaping save to preserve the draw.

Among the other highlights for San Jose was the return of forward Steven Lenhart. The fan favorite received a standing ovation when he entered the game in the 69th minute for Ramiro Corrales.

San Jose returns to action on Sunday, April 14 against the Portland Timbers at JELD-WEN Field. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. PT on NBC Sports, 1590 KLIV and 1370 KZSF.
