'Wolves Drop Series Finale in Portland 9-5

The SeaWolves dropped the rubber game of a three-game series against the Portland Sea Dogs on Sunday afternoon at Hadlock Field 9-5. The âWolves return home Tuesday taking on the Trenton Thunder (New York Yankees)
Portland struck first in the bottom of the second inning against Erie starter Casey Crosby. Ronald Bermudez grounded to third with two outs and reached on a two-out Bryan Pounds error. Oscar Tejeda doubled home Bermudez for a 1-0 Sea Dogs lead.
The SeaWolves tied the game in the top of the third against Portland starter and knuckleballer Charlie Haeger. Jamie Johnson doubled to left for Erie's first hit of the game. The two-bagger tied Rawley Bishop for the team lead with 25. Johnson moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a Brandon Douglas base knock to center making it a 1-1 game.
Erie took its first lead of the game in the top of the sixth. Audy Ciriaco tripled with one out and Deik Scram walked putting runners on the corners for Pounds. Pounds doubled down the left field line plating Ciriaco for a 2-1 lead. Scram would scored on a Bryan Holaday sacrifice fly making it 3-1 âWolves.
The Sea Dogs promptly tied the game in the last of the sixth. Ryan Dent singled, Ryan Khoury and Alex Hassan each walked loading the bases against Crosby. Crosby was lifted in favor of Tyler Stohr who got the next two, but could not avoid the two-out, two-run double from Matt Spring, tying the game 3-3.
Erie wasted no time taking back the lead in the top of the seventh against Portland reliever Josh Fields. Johnson drew his league-leading 75th walk to start the inning and Douglas singled putting runners on the corners for Justin Henry. Henry hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Johnson for a 4-3 lead. Ciriaco doubled home Douglas making it 5-3 Erie.
The Erie bullpen could not hold onto the lead as the Sea Dogs took the lead right back in the bottom of the seventh against Stohr. Tejeda walked and Jon Hee doubled putting two in scoring position. Dent hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Tejeda making it a one-run game at 5-4. With two outs, Hassan walked putting runners on the corners for Mark Wager. Wagner doubled over the head of Johnson in center, giving the Sea Dogs a 6-5 lead. Will Middlebrooks singled home Wagner for a 7-5 edge.
In the eighth, Portland would pad its lead with two more two-out runs on a Hassan base hit, taking a 9-5 lead. Eight of the nine runs the SeaWolves gave up in the game came with two outs.
Stohr (0-1) took the loss allowing four runs on four hits in 1.2 innings of work with a walk and three strikeouts.
Crosby took the no-decision allowing three runs, two earned, on two hits with three walks and six strikeouts.
The SeaWolves are off on Monday and will return to action on Tuesday night, taking on Trenton in doubleheader action beginning at 6:05 p.m. The two clubs will play a pair of seven inning games. One ticket is good for both games on Tuesday night.
