Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release
GRAND CHUTE, WI - Shane Carrier hit a pair of solo homers and three Cedar Rapids Kernels pitchers shut down the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on five hits on Sunday at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Cedar Rapids added a pair of runs later and would go on to beat Wisconsin 4-0.
The Kernels (58-55 overall, 19-24 second half) took the lead on a two-out, solo homer by Shane Carrier in the top of the second inning.
Carrier, who just rejoined the Kernels from Minnesota's Appalachian League affiliate last night, made it 2-0 when he hit a solo homer to the Kernels bullpen in left-center on a 2-2 pitch from Pennington in the fifth inning.
The homers by Carrier were the only two hits allowed by Pennington in his 4-2/3 innings of work. Pennington struck out seven to match his professional single-game high in strikeouts.
Kernels starting pitcher Charlie Barnes pitched five scoreless innings, walked one, allowed two hits, and struck out seven. Barnes, a 4th round pick of the Minnesota Twins in the 2017 draft, earned his first Midwest League win with his performance on Sunday.
Cedar Rapids doubled their lead against reliever Daniel Brown in the top of the sixth. Jordan Gore started the inning with a single. Jimmy Kerrigan followed with a double to left-center. Gore beat the throw to the plate and Kerrigan took third on the throw home. Christian Cavaness followed with a sacrifice fly to score Kerrigan for a 4-0 lead.
The Timber Rattlers (45-66, 19-24) didn't get a runner past second base in the game. Keston Hiura doubled with two outs in the sixth inning off reliever Logan Lombana for his tenth extra-base hit in 18 games with the Rattlers. Mario Feliciano singled with two outs in the ninth off Ryan Mason to extend his hitting streak to ten games. Feliciano has matched his longest hitting streak of the season.
Game three of the series is set for Monday night. Thomas Jankins (7-6, 3.85) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Cedar Rapids has named Tyler Beardsley (3-5, 5.61) as their starter. Game time is 7:05pm.
