
Winterhawks Fall 5-1 in Game 1 vs. Kelowna

The Portland Winterhawks fell 5-1 to the Kelowna Rockets in Game 1 of their second round playoff series Thursday at the Rose Garden in front of 5,272 fans, despite firing nearly 50 shots on net.
The Rockets opened the scoring 3:18 into the game when Zak Stebner converted on a power play to make it 1-0, but the Winterhawks responded on a power play of their own at the 7:08 mark when defenseman Troy Rutkowski snuck in from the point and banged in a rebound to even the game at 1-1.
Kelowna regained the lead at the 15:45 mark of the first when Shane McColgan scored to give the Rockets a 2-1 lead.
The Rockets extended their lead to 3-1 when McColgan scored his second goal of the game with 12.9 seconds left in the second period, a frame in which the Hawks fired 21 shots on goal.
McColgan then scored 2:04 into the third to give the Rockets a 4-1 lead and complete the hat trick. The Rockets' Evan Bloodoff scored at the 12:03 mark to give Kelowna a 5-1 lead that would stand as the final.
The Winterhawks outshot the Rockets 46-36, with Kelowna netminder Adam Brown making 45 saves on the 46 shots. Portland was 1-3 on the power play and 6-7 on the penalty kill.
With an assist on Rutkowski's goal, Nino Niederreiter picked up his 11th point in five playoff games.
The series resumes Sunday with Game 2 at the Rose Garden at 5 p.m.
