Charlottetown Islanders News Release

With the 2021-22 QMJHL season just 5 days away now, the Charlottetown Islanders entered the J.K. Irving Centre Sunday afternoon in Bouctouche for their final tune-up before regular-season action gets underway October 1st.

After taking the win Friday night against the Wildcats in front of fans at the MacLauchlan Arena, spirits were riding high into the Sunday afternoon bout in Bouctouche. Especially with the addition of Islanders captain Brett Budgell making his way into the preseason finale line-up. This was Budgell's first game back in the black and harvest gold since being sent back from Toronto Maple Leafs rookie camp.

The score sheet was in use early on in the first period as both teams had to kill a 5-on-3 powerplay, first, the Islanders doing so successfully, then the Wildcats doing the same. Puck possession was back and forth heavily throughout the first as the game remained scoreless and total shots were just 5-3 in favor of the 'Cats.

The Wildcats were the first team to take an offensive strike, as Thomas Auger maneuvered his way around Islanders D to swing around Jacob Goobie and tuck it past his stretched-out pad and into the back of the net. Assists on the Auger goal went to Alexis Daniel and Miles Mueller. Moments later Islanders rookie D-Man Matt McQuaid dropped the mitts with Moncton forward Nicolas Pavan. Matt McQuaid took care of business as he landed multiple heavy strikes and eventually putting him down on the ice. The two were given fighting majors as well as 10-minute misconducts. McQuaid was also dealt a game misconduct for trying to take off one's own helmet or trying to take off an opponent's. helmet.

The second period concluded with a Wildcats 1-0 lead and leading the Islanders in shots 17-9.

The Islanders finally found the back of the net 3:33 into the final frame when Noah Laaouan was able to beat Vincent Filion to tie the game up at 1-1. Assists went to William Trudeau and Jarrett Todd on the Laaouan goal. Just past the midway point of the 3rd, the 'Cats struck back as Preston Lounsbury was able to sneak it through the five-hole on Goobie to reclaim the lead. Assists were given to Mathis Cloutier and Francis Langlois. This stood to be the game-winning goal as the Wildcats clinched the preseason finale in Bouctouche to send fans home happy.

Final shots tallied at 24-16 for the Wildcats.

The Islanders are back in action again on Friday in Saint John as we open up the regular season on the road against the Sea Dogs. Then we welcome you back to the Eastlink Centre the following night October 2nd for our home opener as the Sea Dogs come to town. Tickets are on sale now in the Islanders team shop located in the Eastlink Centre or by calling 902-892-7351.
