Washington Wild Things News Release
Washington, PA â The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Federal Savings Bank, signed former Duquesne RHP Jim Popp Tuesday morning.
Popp, a Pittsburgh native and graduate of Brashear High School, was signed by the Washington Wild Things on Tuesday morning. He was previously selected in the 50th round by the San Francisco Giants in the MLB 2003 Draft and in the 48th round by the Colorado Rockies following his junior season in June 2002.
A two-year starter for Duquesne, Popp was 3-3 with a 3.54 ERA his junior season, where he led the Dukes in ERA. In 10 games (53.1 IP), Popp struck out 34 batters while walking 20. That season, he allowed no earned runs in seven innings in a win over Lehigh, earned a complete game victory versus Rhode Island and had a complete game win at Xavier where he gave up just one hit while striking out six. Popp is also first on Duquesne's career ERA list at 3.89.
"We've heard great things about Jim," said John Massarelli, the manager of the Wild Things. "Obviously, he's highly thought of, being drafted twice. We saw him throw this morning prior to the league tryout and we liked what we saw."
The Wild Things will draft at least two more players at the Frontier League Tryout today at Falconi Field.
The season opens on May 21 when the Wild Things host the Kalamazoo Kings. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05. Tickets are still available.
