Springfield Cardinals News Release
San Antonio, TX - With a chance to tie a season high with five straight wins, the Cardinals sent 21-year-old Arquimedes Nieto to the hill against the San Antonio Missions at pitcher friendly Wolff Stadium.
For the second straight night, the Cardinals got a lead off triple to start the game. This time it came from Daryl Jones who then came around to score on a one-out single by Matt Carpenter to grab a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the second, Arquimedes Nieto had a tough time as he consistently fell behind in the count and got hurt on back to back doubles by Sawyer Carroll and Luis Martinez to tie the game 1-1. With two outs, Blake Tekotte singled to right field to score Martinez and give the Missions a 2-1 advantage.
San Antonio would get a lead off single by Lance Zawadzki in the 3rd and after a passed ball and a ground out, Zawadzki was at third base. Nieto then struck out Matt Clark before allowing an RBI single to James Darnell to extend the Missions lead to 3-1.
The Missions would take advantage of a Cardinals error in the bottom of the 5th as Logan Forsythe walked and was able to move all the way to third on an errant throw to second base by first baseman Xavier Scruggs allowing runners to be on 1st and 3rd. James Darnell followed with a sacrifice fly to score Forsythe giving the Missions a three run lead, 4-1.
Springfield would load the bases in the sixth on singles by Pete Kozma, Matt Carpenter and Chris Swauger with one out before starter Erik Davis was taken out of the game. With the bases loaded and Xavier Scruggs at the plate, reliever Colt Hynes threw a wild pitch allowing Kozma to score making it a 4-2 game. Scruggs would then strike out before Charlie Cutler drew a walk to load the bases again. Jose Garcia stepped up and hit a rocket to third base that was snared by James Darnell to end the inning with Cardinals down two runs.
In the 8th and the Cardinals trailing by two, Andrew Brown led off with and single and Chris Swauger singled to center put runners at 1st and 2nd with no outs. After two straight strike outs, Jose Garcia walked to load the bases. Aaron Luna had entered the game in the bottom of the 6th in part of a double switch and put in the 9th spot in the order. Luna came up with the bases loaded and two outs and with two strike on him, Luna launched a bases clearing triple to left center to put the Cards ahead 6-5 for the first time since the 2nd inning.
After two scoreless innings of relief from Tom Eager, Blake King came in for the 8th and allowed a double to James Darnell to start the inning and Craig Cooper followed with an RBI double down the right field line to tie the game 5-5. Sawyer Carroll then singled to put runners on the corners. King would get Luis Martinez to bounce into a fielder's choice with Springfield getting Cooper at home. Andy Parrino then popped up to short for the second out. Blake Tekotte then came to the plate and lined an RBI single to right to score Carroll to put the Missions in front 6-5.
The Cardinals had no answer for Evan Scribner in the 9th as he struck out the side to close out the 6-5 win for San Antonio ending the four-game winning streak from Springfield. With Tulsa and NW Arkansas losing on Saturday night, the Cardinals are still in a tie for second place in the second half with Tulsa just two games back of the Naturals. Should the Naturals win the second half, Springfield holds an 8.5 game lead over Tulsa for the next best record in the North Division playoff race.
Springfield will continue their three game series with the San Antonio Missions on Sunday night at Wolff Stadium at 6:05pm. The Cardinals will send right hander Scott McGregor (4-4) to the mound against right hander Jeremy Hefner (10-6) for the Missions.
The Cardinals will return home on Tuesday, August 24th to conclude the regular season home schedule with a seven-game homestand against division rivals Northwest Arkansas and Arkansas. Tuesday, the Cardinals will be giving away 4,000 Baseball Card Team Sets thanks to our friends at Sysco Foods.
