NEEDHAM, MA (Friday, February 14, 2003) - The Boston Breakers announce the retirement of midfielder Bettina Wiegmann today. The German National Team player has decided not to return for a third season with the Breakers but she will play for her nation in the 2003 World Cup.
Wiegmann has taken a job coaching at Fussballverband Mittelrhein (a regional soccer association) outside of Cologne, Germany. She will work with the Under-13 and Under-15 regional girls teams.
"How fortunate the fans of the Boston Breakers and the fans of the WUSA were to watch Bettina Wiegmann the first two seasons. She is a wonderful talent, a consummate professional and represented the Breakers with great distinction,'' said Breakers President and GM Joe Cummings. "We wish her well as she continues her international career and begins her coaching at the youth club level. As an organization, the Boston Breakers thank her for her dedication to the league, to this team and to the soccer community of New England. We wish her all the best.''
Wiegmann is coming off her most successful season for the Breakers in 2002. She was Boston's fourth leading scorer with two goals and nine assists for 13 points. Wiegmann finished the season with two multiple-point games, her first coming on Saturday, April 27 in a 2-2 tie vs. San Diego.
The 31-year old finished her career with the Breakers with three goals, 10 assists for 16 points. She played in a total of 33 games for 2,834 minutes. Wiegmann missed a number of games in 2001 due to National Team Duty and a foot injury. In 2002, she missed one game due to national team duty. A trademark of Wiegmann's game was the "German Circle", a move she used to shed a number of opponents.
