WHITECAPS WOMEN'S MATCH REPORT:
Whitecaps Women 2 Arizona Heatwave 0
Saturday, May 14, 2005 Swangard Stadium, Burnaby, BC (attendance: 4,130)
Overview:
Whitecaps Women battled 2-0 win over much-improved Arizona Heatwave side open defence of their W-League championship. The Caps came up against a hot goalkeeper in former US international Jennifer Branam, who managed to keep it scoreless well into the second half.
Midfielder Brittany Timko netted the eventual winner at 61', while forward Katie Thorlakson had a goal and an assist and was named Player of the Game. The crowd of 4,130 was the largest ever for a Whitecaps Women's game.
Goalkeeper Sian Bagshawe made 4 saves on 8 shots to record the shutout. Arizona keeper Jennifer Branam was peppered with 26 shots, recording 11 saves.
Scoring Summary:
61' Vanc Brittany Timko (Katie Thorlakson) Thorlakson at the top of the area laid it off to the left for Timko breaking, and she lifted it high into the net over the keeper from 15 yards.
83' Vanc Katie Thorlakson (Sydney Leroux)15-year-old Leroux, just into the game, picked up the ball on the right side of the box, and crossed for Thorlakson to head home.
Game Notes:
Arizona had their best chance of the first half at just 4', as Jennifer Klein tested keeper Sian Bagshawe with a hard shot.
The Arizona keeper made 5 saves on 12 shots in the first half, including: a first-timer from Katie Thorlakson at 2', a good header from Amber Allen at 32', a 40-yard shot from Allen at 38' with the keeper scrambling to just get back in position in time.
Amber Allen almost ended the deadlock at 50', when she was twice denied by the Arizona keeper. Her effort on the rebound was hampered by an Arizona defender being draped all over her.
A hard shot from Kara Lang at 85' was barely stopped by the keeper. Arizona almost equalised at 55' when star striker Elizabeth Bogus broke past two defenders, but her curling shot from 14 yards on the left was pulled in by keeper Sian Bagshawe.
16-year-old Canadian international defender Sophie Schmidt got the start to make her Whitecaps debut.
Reserve team forward Sydney Leroux of Surrey, BC, subbed in at 82' to become the youngest player in team history, age 15 years and 7 days. She set up Vancouver's second goal a minute later, with virtually her first touch of the ball.
The Whitecaps are undefeated in 30 games. They also have a 12-game win streak in regular season play, and have never been shutout at home.

WHITECAPS MEN'S MATCH REPORT:
Whitecaps Men 4
Charleston Battery 0
Sunday, May 15, 2005
Swangard Stadium, Burnaby, BC (attendance: 4,296)
Overview:
Whitecaps overpowered the visiting Charleston Battery 4-0 thanks to a four goal performance by striker Jason Jordan! Jordan fired Vancouver into the lead at 29' and added three more goals in the second half to total four goals in 48 minutes. He becomes the first player on the men's team to score four in a game since Niall Thompson did it in 1999 against Team Sacramento.
Goalkeeper Mike Franks recorded 5 saves on 12 shots to earn his 4th straight shutout. The Whitecaps shutout streak is now at 360 minutes, 201 minutes short of the all-time team record of 561 set last year by Alex Marques.
The win raises Vancouver's record to 2W-0L-2T, for 8 points, as the Caps remain in 5th place in the USL First Division. Charleston fall to 1-4-2 for 5 points, good for 7th place.
The Whitecaps next game is Sunday May 22 at home to the Atlanta Silverbacks. That game is the second half of a Swangard Stadium doubleheader, as the Whitecaps Women host the Mile High Mustangs in W-League action, starting at 4:00pm.
Scoring Summary:
29' Vanc Jason Jordan (Martin Nash) Nash whipped in a cross from the left, and both Dave Morris and Carlo Corazzin left it to run to Jordan on the right. Jordan controlled it and then fired in from 12 yards.
49' Vanc Jason Jordan (Carlo Corazzin) Corazzin flicked a header onto Jordan in space 40 yards out, and he outpaced the last defender, Gabe Bernstein, to run in and chip the ball over the onrushing keeper.
55' Vanc Jason Jordan (Davide Xausa) Xausa on the right side of the box sent in a good cross which Jordan volleyed in acrobatically from eight yards for the hat trick. Xausa had subbed in at half-time for his first action of the season.
77' Vanc Jason Jordan (Said Ali)Tino Cucca broke down the right side of the box and centered for Ali who played it to the left for Jordan to fire in number from 5 yards. It was Jordan's fourth of the game and season.
Game Notes:
Charleston had a number of shots, but few that really tested goalkeeper Mike Franks. Their best effort was probably a powerful header from Justin Evans at 37' that Franks held well.
Jason Jordan's goals moved him well past the 150 point milestone. He now has 61 career goals and 35 assists for 157 points in 182 games. He needs four more points to pass John Catliff and move into second place in Vancouver's all-time scoring list (Note: Catliff's point totals are lower than they should be, as he played most of his career in the Canadian Soccer League which did not award assists)
Over the last three seasons, the Whitecaps are 13-0-3 in games in which Jason Jordan has scored.
Surprisingly, Charleston outshot Vancouver 12-7. Battery keeper Chris Doyle was credited with only 1 save.
Steve Kindel played his 40th consecutive game.
This was Charleston's third straight loss on their western road trip. They were defeated 1-0 by Portland on Thursday and 1-0 by Seattle on Saturday.
Charleston was without top scorer Greg Simmonds who played in the first two games of the road trip but did not dress against Vancouver.
The pre-game match was the final of the Men's Senior Provincial Cup, the top prize in BC amateur soccer, with Surrey United taking on Sporting Club of Vancouver. The game was scoreless through extra time, with Sporting winning on penalty kicks. This delayed the start of the Whitecaps game by about 10 minutes.
