Spokane Chiefs News Release

Spokane, Wash. - Team White skated to a 7-6 shootout victory over Team Red in the annual Red-White Game on Sunday afternoon, marking the culmination of the Spokane Chiefs' 2021 Training Camp at Spokane Arena. The Chiefs hosted an estimated masked 1,200 fans for the first time since March 2020 and now face seven WHL pre-season contests before to opening the regular season on Saturday, October 2 versus the Tri-City Americans.

Veteran forward Luke Toporowski scored shorthanded to put Red on the board first early in the first period. Red added a second as prospect Carter Nailen ripped a goal inside the right post to make it 2-0.

White answered in kind to tie it at 2-2 headed into the first intermission after goals from veterans Cordel Larson and Brandon Reller.

Forwards Erik Atchison (Red) and Ben Thornton (White) tallied goals in the second period, both in the second half of the frame after a planned mid-period goalie change.

The third period continued the wild back-and-forth action as Reller scored his second of the day to make it 4-3 White before Reed Jacobson got on the board for Red to tie it once again at 4-4. Prospect Kooper Gizowski found the net to give Red a narrow 5-4 lead, then Ty Cheveldayoff answered to even things up at five apiece midway through the third.

Toporowski struck again and it looked like Red would finally create some breathing room with about nine minutes left, but White refused to quit as Washington Capitals prospect Bear Hughes cleaned up a rebound to tie the game at 6-6.

Bypassing an overtime period and skipping straight to the shootout, the goalies stood tall except for one goal, scored by prospect Ethan Rosenoff to give White the thrilling victory.

Spokane's scouting staff trimmed the 52-man camp roster to 40 for Sunday's intrasquad scrimmage and will trim further as the team begins its pre-season slate this month. The annual Don Kiehl Awards -- given to Red-White Game team MVPs -- were presented to Reller and Toporowski for their efforts. Kiehl was a long-time off-ice official for the organization and the awards were presented by his daughter Karen, who remains part of the organization.
