Wheat Kings Sign Defenceman Zach Turner to WHL Standard Player Agreement

January 22, 2021 - Western Hockey League (WHL) - Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

The Brandon Wheat Kings have announced the signing of 17-year old defenceman Zach Turner to a Western Hockey League Standard Player Agreement.

Turner is a 6'2", 181 lbs. 2004-born product of Boissevain, Manitoba and was drafted by the Wheat Kings in the second round (#31 overall) of the 2019 WHL Bantam Draft. He's played his last two seasons with the Southwest Cougars U18 AAA, scoring 38 points (16G-22A) in 56 games.

"Zach is going to be a great addition to our defence," says Wheat Kings General Manager, Darren Ritchie. "Zach has been playing with the Southwest Cougars at the bantam and U18 levels for the past four seasons, so our fans in the southern region of the province might be familiar with his play. He moves the puck well and has a very good shot from the offensive blueline. We're really happy with Zach's progression on the ice and we're happy for him and his family to be a part of our organization."

Turner's is the seventh signing to come from players taken in the 2019 draft by the Wheat Kings, after fellow Manitoban and former Southwest Cougar teammate, Owen Harris, signed with the club earlier this week.

"Signing with the Wheat Kings is awesome," says Turner. "I've always wanted to play for the Wheat Kings so when I got drafted by them I was really excited to work towards becoming part of the team. Growing up 45 minutes away from Brandon, I've been to lots of games at the Keystone and this is another big step towards my goal".

On January 8th, the Western Hockey League announced that league governors have agreed to a 24-game interdivisional Regular Season schedule for the 2020-21 season. The start date for the season will be determined once final approval has been received from the Health Authorities in each provincial and state jurisdiction.
