Wheat Kings' Captain Inks Pro Deal

March 22, 2019 - Western Hockey League (WHL) - Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Brandon, MB. - The National Hockey League's Carolina Hurricanes have announced the signing of Brandon Wheat Kings' captain Stelio Mattheos to a three year entry level contract that will begin next season.

The club also announced that the 19-year old Winnipeg product will begin his professional career with the Charlotte Checkers under an amateur tryout contract for the balance of the 2018-19 campaign.

The 19-year-old Mattheos was the WHL's fourth-leading goal scorer last season, scoring 44 goals while serving as the captain of the Brandon Wheat Kings. A third-round pick in the 2018 NHL Draft, Mattheos finished his career in junior hockey in spectacular fashion, posting 96 points to lead the Wheat Kings in scoring this season and following up on a 90-point performance in the year following his draft. He was the only player in the WHL to score 40 or more goals in each of the past two seasons.

"Stelio is a highly skilled center coming off back to back 90-point seasons in Brandon," says 'Canes' General Manager Don Waddell. "He's shown great ability as a goal scorer and we look forward to the next steps in his development."

With Carolina, he joins Foxwarren product Morgan geekie with the Checkers.

Mattheos says that his four years in Brandon was valuable.

"When I showed up I was just probably a kid," he told Perry Bergson of the Brandon Sun. "My knowledge of the game and my skill level has gone up tremendously since I showed up in Brandon. I can't thank everyone enough in Brandon for helping me to develop."

Mattheos capped off his 2018-19 WHL season this past weekend by taking home four trophies at the Wheat Kings annual awards day - Most Valuable Player, Turk Broda Top Manitoba Born, Scoring and the Canad Inns 3-Star Award.
