Jacksonville Barracudas News Release
The Jacksonville Barracudas initiated the Atlantic Coast Hockey League season last Thursday night against the Macon Trax in Macon. Although the âCudas suffered a 3-2 loss, rookie winger Trevor Secundiak had the honor of scoring the first goal in ACHL history. The puck, along with his jersey and stick, have been requested by the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, Canada to be permanently displayed.
The game was marred by a disputed goal, which turned out to be the game winner for the Trax. It appeared that the puck was lodged in the pads of Barracuda goalie Jeff Salajko; however the goal judge stated that the puck had entered the net and the goal was allowed to stand.
The Barracudas traveled to Orlando on Friday to play the Seals in their season opener. The Seals prevailed 5-3 in a game filled with excitement. Attempting to overcome both the Seals and the crowd of 5,719, the Barracudas pulled to within one goal early in the third period, only to see the Seals score their fifth goal less than a minute later.
The Barracudas traveled to St. Petersburg on Saturday for an ACHL encounter with the St. Pete Parrots. This made the third game in three nights....all on the road and all were opening nights for the opponents. The Barracudas got off to a fast start scoring four unanswered goals in the first six minutes of the game. However, the Parrots scored late in the period to make it 4-1 âCudas. St. Pete scored two more goals in the second period and the Barracudas clung to a 4-3 lead going into the third period. The âCudas held off the Parrots, but with just 44.1 seconds remaining the Parrots tied the game, sending it into overtime.
Neither team scored during the 3-on-3 overtime period and the game went to a shootout. Goalie Duane Perrilat stymied the Parrots and Jay Ott tallied a score for the Barracudas as they prevailed 5-4. This was the first shoot out in ACHL history.
The Barracudas established quite a few firsts this week.....first goal in ACHL history, Trevor Secundiak, played before the largest opening crowd 5,719 in Orlando, played and won the first shoot out, and had the first shootout goal scored.
All in all, it was an exciting week for both the ACHL and the Jacksonville Barracudas.
The Barracudas travel to Fayetteville, NC to take on the Cape Fear Fire Antz on Friday, October 25 and then go to Orlando for a return engagement with the Orlando Seals on Saturday night. The Barracudas open their home schedule on Friday, November at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Face off time is 7:30PM.
The Barracudas continue to be involved with the First Coast community. This week, Barracuda U., the school instructional program, will travel to schools in the greater Jacksonville area. Players will instruct the kids on the ins and outs of ice hockey and will stress the "Stay in School" and "Just Say No" programs. Any schools interested in having a Barracuda U. visit may call the office at 904-367-1423.
