Week 8 Preview

May 26, 2023 - National Arena League (NAL) - Jacksonville Sharks News Release

JACKSONVILLE, FL - The 3-2 Sharks will return to Texas on Sunday to play the undefeated San Antonio Gunslingers. Jacksonville is yet to lose on the road this season, winning both away games in dominating fashion. They started the season in West Texas, taking down the War Birds 54-26, and, in week three, beat the Mustangs 73-53 in Fayetteville.

In the first meeting between the two this season, Jacksonville fell just short of San Antonio at the Tank, losing 63-62 in overtime. Khalil McClain led the way for the Sharks, scoring five of the team's touchdowns, and he also recorded a sac and interception on defense. The game ended in heartbreak as a missed extra point by Jacksonville in overtime led to a win for San Antonio on the next drive.

Last week, Jacksonville proved its dominance over the Albany Empire, taking down the reigning NAL Champions 79-34 at home. It was the first home win of the season for Jacksonville after dominating on the road to start the year.

Multiple Sharks players took home Player of the Week awards after solid performances against the Empire. Quarterback Sam Castronova was named Offensive Player of the Week after throwing 283 yards and six touchdowns against his former team. On the other side of the ball, Jabari Gorman was the league's Defensive Player of the Week with two interceptions and seven tackles. The Ironman of the Week was Marquel Wade, who scored two touchdowns, one of which was a pick-six in his first game back in Jacksonville.

San Antonio took down in-state rival West Texas last week to improve to 5-0. Former Sharks quarterback Arvell Nelson threw for 251 yards and three touchdowns. Kadir Chisholm scored two touchdowns on 107 receiving yards for the Gunslingers.

The Sharks kickoff at the Freeman Coliseum in San Antonio at 4 pm on Sunday.
