Warriors Harvest Wheat Kings to Open Weekend Series

September 27, 2019 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Moose Jaw Warriors News Release

The Moose Jaw Warriors played a solid team game for 60 minutes Friday and walked out of Brandon with a 5-0 win over the Wheat Kings.

In the opening moments of the game, both teams were able to come up the ice quickly but both teams made key defensive plays to break up quality scoring chances.

At 7:41, Warriors 16-year-old rookie Eric Alarie grabbed a loose puck along the Wheat Kings left boards and tossed a quick shot to the net that beat Jiri Patera to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead.

With five minutes in the period, Jadon Joseph dug the puck away from the Wheat Kings in their left corner and then made a quick pass to Carson Denomie inside the left circle.

Denomie took two strides towards the goal line and then made a tape-to-tape cross-ice pass to Kaeden Taphorn on the right side of the Brandon net where he tapped in his first goal of the season to give the Warriors a 2-0 lead.

Brandon came out hard to start the second period but the Warriors weathered the Wheat Kings early storm and were able to keep their two-goal lead.

With under three minutes left in the period, the Warriors charged across the Brandon line.

Keenan Taphorn had the puck on the right-wing and was able to set up Ryder Korczak in the high slot.  The rebound went high into the air on the right side of the Brandon net where Taphorn was able to knock it over the goal line for this third of the season to make it 3-0.

Playing shorthanded five minutes into the third period, the Warriors flung the puck from their zone all the way down the ice.

Brandon goalie Jiri Patera misplayed the puck behind his net and turned it over to Ryder Korczak along the right goal line.  Korczak tossed the puck cross-ice to Tate Popple in the left circle where he scored shorthanded to put the game out of reach.

In the final minute of regulation, the Warriors put one more on the board when Jadon Joseph whacked in his first of the season on a goalmouth scramble.

Eric Alarie, Jadon Joseph, and Kaeden Taphorn had a goal and two points each, Carson Denomie and Ryder Korczak had two assists each, and Bailey Brkin made 22 saves to record his first shutout in a Warriors uniform.

These two teams will battle again Saturday only this time at Mosaic Place in downtown Moose Jaw.  Tickets are available at the Mosaic Place Box Office or at www.mjwarriors.ca.

Catch all the action on Country 100 starting with the PreGame Show at 6:40pm.
