Milwaukee Wave News Release
MILWAUKEE, WI (January 23, 2007) - The Major Indoor Soccer League announced today that Milwaukee Wave forward Anthony Maher has been named the league's Offensive Player of the Week and goalkeeper Nick Vorberg received the Goalkeeper of the Week award for the seven-day period ending on Jan. 21.
With those awards, Milwaukee Wave players have generated nine MISL Player of the Week honors in the 12 weeks of regular play of the 2006-07 season. Both Vorberg and Maher received their first honors this season.
This past weekend the Wave allowed only three goals over two victories, in which Vorberg played an integral part by saving 9 of the 10 shots on goal in Baltimore and 12 out of 14 shots on Saturday against the Chicago Storm. Vorberg remained in first place in the MISL with 182 shots saved.
After the Wave acquired Maher from the Storm for the 2006-07 season, injuries forced him to miss all but six games. But last weekend, Maher proved why the Wave traded for him. Finally getting his chance to play against his former team, the Chicago Storm, Maher showcased his talents with a hat trick, tallying a total of six points in one game.
"It was great to get two victories over the weekend and Nick and Anthony were important factors in both games," said Head Coach Keith Tozer. "I thought everyone played great to get us back to .500."
The MISL also named the Defensive Player of the Week, Philadelphia KiXX defender Pat Morris. This is Morris' second weekly honor of the 2006-07 season. Morris has netted 12 points and 12 blocks so far this season.
Milwaukee Wave faces the California Cougars in a home-and-home series starting at 7 p.m. Friday at the U.S. Cellular Arena. Both squads will travel back to California to finish the series on Saturday at 8 p.m. CST. The game on Friday is Froedtert and Medical College of Wisconsin Team Picture Card Night. The first 5,000 fans will receive the picture card of the 2006-07 Wave. Tickets for all Wave home games ($14,$16 and $20) can be purchased by calling 414-224-WAVE. Wave tickets are also available at all Ticketmaster outlets and www.ticetmaster.com. Groups of 10 or more should contact the Wave office for group rate discounts. Saturday's game can be heard on WISN 1130 AM or via the Teamline link at www.milwaukeewave.com.
