IT'S A RETURN OF THE JEDI DEFENSEMAN LUKE VOLK RE-JOINS LUBBOCK
LUBBOCK, TX: August 28, 2002 â The Lubbock Cotton Kings of the Central Hockey League are exceptionally excited to announce the re-signing of defenseman Luke Volk for the 2002/2003 season.
"We had acquired Luke a month into last season off waivers (from El Paso) and we were pleasantly surprised with his skills," said Cotton Kings head coach/director of hockey operations, Bill McDonald. "He is a great skater and because the effort he puts into every shift, everyone takes to him. This season, I want to see Volk step up his game and I think we can by matching him with a rugged physical defenseman at the blueline."
Volk, a 23 year-old native of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, re-signs with Lubbock after recording 4 goals and 11 assists for 15 points in 58 games last season. He began the season with the El Paso Buzzards recording 2 assists in 9 games before the Buzzards released him. It didn't take long before the Cotton Kings acquired his rights off the free agent market and Volk arrived with the âKings on 11/23/01. Volk finished the season ranked 4th on the team in scoring by defensemen (15pts) and had an impressive month of January, ranking 2nd in scoring by defensemen for the month with 6 points (2g,4a) in 13 games and co-led the team that month in power play goals with 2. El Paso's loss was Lubbock's gain when Volk arrived in Lubbock because the rookie knew exactly how to let the Buzzards know he was missed in their line-up. Volk contributed with 2 goals and 4 assists for 6 points in 9 games against his former team (El Paso) and also grabbed a (+5) +/- rating and netted his lone game-winning goal of the season against them.
The 5'9", 180-pound defenseman turned pro last season after a memorable college tenure at the University of St. Thomas (St. Paul, MN) from 97/98-00/01. He was part of a prestigious class to roll through UST, as he was part of four consecutive Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) titles and also a member (alongside former Cotton Kings teammate Andy Disch) of the 99/00 UST squad that lost in the NCAA Division III title game. Volk recorded 7 goals and 34 assists for 41 points in 86 games over his college career, earning All-MIAC Team "Honorable Mention" honors for the 99/00 season and "First Team" honors for the 00/01 season.
The signing of Luke Volk places the Cotton Kings with eleven signatures under contract for the 02/03 season, joining Volk with Lincoln Beaudry, Mike Brusseau, Chet Camrud, Julius Halfkenny, Toby Harris, Dave MacIntyre, Jan Melichercik, Jay Niemiec, Ryan Olson and Neil Savary.
The Cotton Kings are currently preparing for the 2002-2003 season, and their second season in the Central Hockey League. Season ticket information can be attained by calling (806) 747-PUCK, or visiting the Cotton Kings website at www.cottonkings.com. --PUCK--
