Vermont Rallies In 8th Inning For 7-5 Win On Wednesday

Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

ABERDEEN, MD --- The Vermont Lake Monsters reached the .500 mark for the first time this season with their sixth win in the last seven games after scoring four runs in the top of the eighth inning for a 7-5 come-from-behind victory over the Aberdeen Ironbirds in New York-Penn League action Wednesday night at Ripken Stadium.

The Ironbirds scored four times in the fifth inning to take 5-2 lead, but the Lake Monsters rallied from a deficit of at least three runs for the third time in their last seven games. Michael Soto began the comeback with a solo homer down the left-field line in the seventh inning to cut the Aberdeen lead to 5-3. It was Soto's second home run of the season and Vermont's second homer of the night.

A Boog Powell leadoff single and one-out walk to Tyler Marincov began the Lake Monsters rally in the eighth inning. Ryan Huck greeted reliever Williams Louico by drilling the first pitch to leftcenter for an RBI double and Jaycob Brugman followed with a two-run groundball triple down the right-field line on a 0-2 pitch to score Marincov and Huck for a 6-5 Vermont lead. Brugman then scored on a wild pitch for the fourth run of the inning.

Marincov was 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and hit a solo home run in the top of the first inning off Orioles pitcher Steve Johnson, who started the game for Aberdeen on a rehab assignment from Baltimore. Powell and Brugman also had two hits for Vermont, while Tyler Johnson struckout two in two scoreless innings of relief for the win and Trevor Bayless four strikeouts in two scoreless innings for his fourth save.

Aberdeen outhit Vermont 14-9 on the night, but Lake Monster pitchers did not walk an Ironbird batter and record 10 strikeouts. Vermont pitchers also saw a 22-inning scoreless streak snapped in the second inning on a Mike Yastzremski RBI triple, just the second triple of the season for a Vermont opponent.

Vermont has now won four of its last five road games after going 4-24 in the previous 28 away games. The 7-5 win was also the Lake Monsters first victory in 11 games this season when their opponent scored five or more runs and Vermont's 10th come-from-behind win.

The Lake Monsters will look to complete their first three-game road series sweep since 2010 on Thursday night at Aberdeen beginning at 7:05 pm. Vermont returns Centennial Field for a four-day, five-game homestand starting on Friday night against Stedler Division-leading Tri-City.
