USHL Update - Week 16

AROUND THE LEAGUE

Making Moves: The Fargo Force currently sit in second place in the Western Conference with 47 points and have been on a tear as of late. Before a 5-2 loss to Tri-City on Saturday, Fargo was on a six-game winning streak and had won 11 of 12. They have been led by forward Dominic Toninato who has points in 12 of his last 13 games and is sporting a nine-game point streak, registering 10 points (5g, 5a) during that span. Also contributing to the Force's success is Jordan Nelson who has eight points (6g, 2a) on his current five-game point streak. Fargo has won 16 of its last 23 games.

The Moore You Score, the Better: Tri-City Storm forward Trevor Moore has been finding his way onto the score sheet a lot as of late. He is currently riding a six-game point streak, tallying a pair of goals and seven assists over that span. This is the third time this season that the Thousand Oaks, CA native registered a point in at least five straight contests. He has recorded points in 11 of his last 12 games played and currently leads the team in scoring with 38 points (15g, 23a).

Soaring and Scoring: It's been a little over a week since Waterloo Black Hawks forward J.T. Stenglein was traded from Sioux City, but he has had an immediate impact on his new team. Through his first three games with Waterloo, the Greece, NY native tallied three goals and four assists, including a four-point (2g, 2a) performance in Saturday's 6-5 shootout win against Muskegon. Overall, he has points in six of his last seven games, amassing 12 points (4g, 8a) over that span. Since November 24th (17 games), Stenglein has failed to score in just three contests, registering 22 points (9g, 13a).

Back on Track: After being held off the score sheet for six consecutive games, Youngstown Phantoms defenseman Ryan Lowney has recorded points in three straight contests, compiling two goals and three assists in that span. Lowney has 20 points on the season (5g, 15a), which ranks him tops amongst Phantom defensemen and third overall on the team. Goaltender Sean Romeo is also experiencing some success as of late having won three straight starts and five of his last six. Since December 22nd, the Cary, NC native is 5-1-0 with a 1.98 goals-against average, a .927 save percentage, and one shutout.

Backend Scoring: Lincoln Stars defenseman Paul LaDue extended his point lead among USHL defensemen with his seventh goal on the season on Saturday. Along with his seven goals, he had registered 20 assists for 27 points. Omaha Lancers defenseman Tucker Poolman continues to show a scoring touch as he tallied his eighth power play goal of the season in Friday's loss to Dubuque, which extends his lead among all USHL players in the category. All of his goals this season have come via the man-advantage and he has added seven assists for a total of 15 points on the year. Mark Friedman of the Waterloo Black Hawks has recorded points in five of his last seven games. He had a goal and an assist over the weekend and he recorded his first career power play goal as part of Waterloo's 6-3 win over Team USA on Friday. He has 19 points (6g, 19a) through 35 games this season.

First Time for Everything: A pair of Indiana Ice defensemen recorded "firsts" in the team's 6-4 win over Green Bay on Sunday. Defenseman Rinat Valiev tallied a pair of goals, giving him his first multi-goal game of his USHL career. He now has five goals and six assists through 31 games. The second "first" occurred when Ice defenseman Drew Newmeyer potted his first USHL goal in the third period. Through 32 games this season, the Scottsdale, AZ native has a goal and five assists.

Wasting Little Time: Sioux City Musketeers forwards Trevor Olson and Kyle Schmidt each recorded a goal in their first weekend with the team after being acquired via trades. Schmidt scored in the second period of Friday's 3-2 loss against Lincoln, his first game with Sioux City, while Olson recorded his first goal on his first shift of the game in Saturday's 2-1 loss to Sioux Falls. Nathan Walker also got off to a quick start while playing his first USHL game. The forward netted a goal just 2:45 into the game for the Youngstown Phantoms, his first of three shots on goal in the 3-2 win over Chicago. Tanner Pond made a good impression on his new teammates on Friday when he netted the game-winning goal for the Green Bay Gamblers in the 3-2 victory over Indiana. It was the first game-winning goal of his USHL career which has spanned 112 regular season games.

Hats Off: Sioux Falls Stampede forward Tony Calderone recorded his first USHL career hat trick in the 7-1 victory over Des Moines on Friday. His second goal of the game proved to be his fifth game-winner of the season, ranking second in the USHL. His third goal was his 17th of the season, moving him into first place on the Stampede and tied for seventh overall in the League.

Puck Stopping: Omaha Lancers goaltender Cole Bruns earned his first USHL career shutout in the 2-0 victory over Chicago on Saturday. The 18-year-old did so making a career high 43 saves and snapped a personal three-game winless streak.

News and Notes: Muskegon Lumberjacks defenseman Michael Preston recorded his first points of the season after dishing out two assists in the Lumberjacks 6-5 loss to Waterloo on Saturday...Zeb Knutson scored two goals in less than four minutes during Friday's 7-1 win against Des Moines. It extended his point streak to eight games. He had five multi-point efforts during that stretch...Tri-City Storm forward Brian Ward returned from injury and recorded a goal and three assists over the weekend in his first games since November 21st. He now has points in each of his last seven games played...Chicago Steel forward Woody Hudson grabbed an assist in Chicago's 2-1 shootout win on Sunday; his first game since being traded from Indiana on Saturday. It helped the Steel snap a four-game losing streak...Waterloo Black Hawks forward Vince Hinostroza had two goals and two assists in Saturday's 6-5 win over Muskegon...Jack Rowe scored two goals for the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders in Friday's 4-1 victory against Muskegon, extending his point streak to four games. He netted five goals over that span.
