US Lacrosse Magazine Ranks All-Time MLL Players

June 1, 2020 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL) News Release

To celebrate the twentieth anniversary of Major League Lacrosse, US Lacrosse Magazine has released its ranking of the top 20 MLL players in the league's history. The rankings were compiled and written by Phil Shore, a writer for the magazine who played lacrosse at Emerson College.

In compiling the list, Shore spoke with players, coaches, and other league members to bring a variety of voices and opinions to the process. From there, he analyzed stats, accolades, and championships won to create a well-rounded overall ranking.

"So much about the list was a hard decision," Shore wrote in an email to MLL. "There has been so much talent and so many success stories in league history. I wanted to be respectful of all the players, whether they were on my list or not. Every player, from All-Star to practice squad member, puts in so much to be able to get that far and do what they do, so I couldn't just pick some names haphazardly."

Coming in at number one overall on the list is John Grant Jr. of the Denver Outlaws. The 14-year veteran has two MVP awards, three offensive player of the year awards, and five league championships. Grant is the league's most tenured player and holds the record for career points scored.

The list contained one other current MLL player. At number nineteen on the list is midfielder Matt Abbott, the nine-time all-star for the Chesapeake Bayhawks. The Syracuse graduate has played for the Bayhawks since being drafted ninth overall in 2009. Abbott holds the Bayhawks record for total career games played and sits only behind Grant for the longest ongoing MLL career.
