U.S. National Under-17, Under-18 Teams To Welome USHL Foes to Ice Cube
THIS WEEK: The U.S. National Under-17 Team returns to home ice for the first time since Dec. 12, when it takes on United States Hockey League East Division foe Waterloo Black Hawks Friday at 7:05 p.m. EST... The U.S. National Under-18 Team is also back in action at home for the first time since Dec. 19. The U18s will take on Waterloo Saturday at 7:05 p.m., before closing out the weekend against defending Clark Cup champion Indiana Ice Sunday at 3:05 p.m.
UNDER-18 HEAD COACH KURT KLEINENDORST: Kurt Kleinendorst is in his first season at the NTDP. Prior to coming to Ann Arbor, Kleinendorst spent three seasons (2006-09) as the first-ever head coach for the American Hockey League's Lowell Devils, top minor-league affiliate of the New Jersey Devils. Kleinendorst also spent one season as an assistant coach with the NHL's Devils in 2000-01. He has led the U.S. National Under-18 Team to a 22-15-0-2 (W-L-T-OTL) record this season.
UNDER-17 HEAD COACH RON ROLSTON: Ron Rolston is in his sixth season as a head coach at the NTDP. Rolston has compiled a career record of 206-126-7-19 (W-L-T-OTL). In January, he led the U.S. National Under-17 Team to its third gold medal at the 2010 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.
U.S. NAT'L U18 TEAM NOTES: Nick Shore (Denver, Colo.) moved into a tie with Brandon Saad (Gibsonia, Pa.) for the top spot on Team USA's points leaderboard. Shore has 14 goals and 16 assists for 30 points, while Saad's 30 have come off of 11 goals and 19 assists... Saad is tied with Austin Czarnik (Washington, Mich.) for the team high with 19 helpers... Bryan Rust (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) notched two goals against Southern Maine to give him the team lead with 15 tallies this season. Additionally, Rust posted his fourth game-winning goal of the season Sunday, which is also the team best... After closing out the NCAA portion of its schedule Sunday, Team USA finished with a 9-8-0 record against NCAA opponents this season including a 3-8-0 mark against Division I schools and a perfect 6-0-0 record against Division III teams.
U.S. NAT'L U17 TEAM NOTES: Rocco Grimaldi (Rossmoor, Calif.) has averaged 1.12 points-per-game so far with a team-best 38 points in 34 games. He leads the team in all major categories including goals (14) and assists (24)... Defenseman Robbie Russo (Westmont, Ill.) leads Team USA's defensive corps and is fourth on the team with 19 points. Six of his seven goals this season have come on the power play, which is tops on the team... Cole Bardreau (Fairport, N.Y.) had four points (2-2) in Team USA's last two games. He also notched the fifth shorthanded goal scored by the U17s this season against Fargo Friday... J.T. Miller (East Palestine, Ohio) is second on the squad with 12 goals, 12 assists and 24 points.
NTDP ALUMNI UPDATE: So far during the 2009-10 season, 43 NTDP alumni have suited up in at least one NHL game... NHL: Patrick Kane (2004-06), of the Chicago Blackhawks, leads all American-born players and is sixth in the NHL with 59 points. His 38 assists are also sixth in the NHL, while his 21 goals pace the Blackhawks. Kane is averaging 1.13 points-per-game... Columbus Blue Jacket R.J. Umberger (1998-2000) is fifth among American-born players with 18 goals this season... Philadelphia Flyers rookie James van Riemsdyk (2006-08) has scored six game-winning goals this season, good for second among American-born players and tied for third overall in the NHL. His 30 points (12-18) are tied for third among the league's rookies... David Steckel (1998-2000), of the Washington Capitals, has won 61.4% of his faceoffs this season, which is just.1% off the league lead... Rick DiPietro (1997-99) made his return from injury Jan. 8. Since his comeback, the New York Islanders netminder has posted a 2-2-0 record, 2.54 goals-against average and.907 save percentage. He also recorded a shutout against the New Jersey Devils on Jan. 18... Seven NTDP alumni were named to the U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team that will compete at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, B.C.
