U.S. National Team News Release


UNITED STATES NATIONAL UNDER-18 TEAM
The U.S. Under-18 Team, dropped two road games to the Manhattanville Valiants, 6-4 and 3-2 in overtime, on October 22 and 23, 2004 respectively.

NEXT ACTION
The U-18 Team heads east to take on a pair of ECAC schools as they play the Harvard Crimson on Saturday, October 30 and the Brown Bears on Sunday, October 31 at 7:00pm and 2:00pm respectively.

Friday, October 22 – US-18, 4, Manhattanville 6
The U-18 team fell to he Manhattanville Valiants, 6-4, whose home rink is in Rye, N.Y. but due to overwhelming demand to see the U.S. Team the game was moved to the Terry Connors Arena in Stamford, Conn.

The U.S. team falling behind 3-1 midway through the first period, lit the lamp twice in :33 seconds as Peter Mueller (Bloomington, Minn.) recorded his sixth tally and Justin Mercier (Erie, Pa.) notched his third goal of the season to send the game into the first intermission all square at three.

The Valiants, whose roster includes just three players from the United States, scored the lone goal in the second period as Tyler Resch (Medicine Hat, Alb.) scored at the 5:53 mark.

An unassisted goal by Mark Mitera (Livonia, Mich.), his third of the year, just :57 into the final period evened the score at four. The U.S. was undermanned, playing with just nine forwards and six defenseman, could not hold the Valiants off the board in the final eight minutes as Resch and Dan Law (Quesnal, B.C.) scored to give the Valiants the 6-4 win.

Saturday, October 13 – US-18, 2, Manhattanville, 3 OT
The NTDP U-18 team lost an overtime affair with the Valiants, 3-2, at the Rye Playland Casino, Rye, N.Y. The U.S. charges once again had to play catch-up, as they had the previous night against the Valiants as the NTDP faced a two-goal deficit.

Jimmy Fraser (Port Huron, Mich.) and Peter Mueller (Bloomington, Minn.) scored in the second period to erase the two-goal lead. Fraser scored unassisted at 9:19 while Mueller, with an assist going to Kyle Lawson (New Hudson, Mich.) tallied shorthanded at 13:41.

One of the 25 Canadian players on the Manhattanville roster, Justin Rohr (Llyodminster, Sask.), scored at 2:06 of the extra session to hand the NTDP defeat.

UNITED STATES NATIONAL UNDER-17 TEAM
The U.S. Under-17 Team posted a 1-3 record at the NAHL Showcase in Blaine, Minn., defeating the Walpole Junior Stars of the EJHL and falling to the Santa Fe Roadrunners (NAHL-South), Boston Jr. Bruins (EJHL) and the Valley Jr. Warriors (EJHL). All games at the showcase counted in NAHL league play.

THIS WEEK'S ACTION
The U-17 Team are back on the road as they travel to Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. to face the Soo Kewadin Casino Indians, October 29 and 30, 2004 in NAHL North Division play.

Wednesday, October 20 – US-17, 2, Santa Fe, 4
The United States National Team Development Program (NTDP) U-17 team fell to the Santa Fe Roadrunners, 4-2, in their first game at the North American Hockey League (NAHL) Showcase in Blaine, Minn.

Rhett Rakhshani (Huntington Beach, Cailf.) two goals, his second and third score of the season and Patrick Kane (Buffalo, N.Y.), two assists, (his second and third helper on the year) tallied all the scoring for the USA as they connected just :47 into the second period to tie the game a one and again in the third period on a U.S. power-play.

Thursday, October 21 – Walpole, 2, US-17,
The U-17 team claimed victory against the Walpole Stars of the EJHL at the NAHL Showcase in Blaine, Minn.

Trailing by one after the first period the U-17 team struck back with a goal from Lino Lakes, Minnesota native, Ryan Flynn just :36 seconds into period number two. Patrick Kane (Buffalo, N.Y.), who also would earn an assist on the game-winning goal in the third period, notched his fourth tally of the season late in the second period to give the U.S. team the lead they would never relinquish.

Michael Carmen (Apple Valley, Minn.) recorded his second goal and first game winning score at the 6:29 mark of the final period. Rhett Rakhshani (Huntington Beach, Calif.) assisted on the Carmen game winner, his second helper of the evening, giving him a team best six assists and nine points.

Friday, October 22 – U-17 0, Jr. Bruins, 7
The U-17 team was held scoreless for the first time this season as the Boston Jr. Bruins beat the U-17 team, 7-0, at the North American Hockey League (NAHL) Showcase in Blaine, Minn.

The Bruins used three power-play goals to hand the U.S. the loss. Pat Kimball led the scoring for the Jr. Bruins with two goals and two assists while goaltender Nevin Hamilton stopped all 32 shots faced to earn the shutout victory.

Saturday, October 23 – Jr. Warriors, 4, U-17, 3
In their final game at the NAHL Showcase theU-17 team dropped a 4-3 game to the Valley Jr. Warriors of the Eastern Junior Hockey League (EJHL).

The U.S. opened the scoring as on the power play as Jamie McBain (Faribault, Minn.) recorded his first goal of the season and Jamie Marcou (Smithtown, N.Y.) notched his first point for the NTDP with an assist.

In the second period the Jr. Warriors scored twice as Dan Rossman and Joe Cucci beat U.S. goaltender Brett Bennett (Williamsville, N.Y.) setting up a nip and tuck third period.

Brian Strait (Waltham, Mass.) opened the third period with his first marker of the year, midway through the final session. Dave Breen answered back for the Jr. Warriors less then a minute after the game tying score from Strait. Apple Valley, Minn. native Michael Carman tied the score with a power-play tally at 14:40.

Not to be denied the Jr. Warriors took advantage of a power-play attempt as David Stathman tallied the game-winning goal with less then three minutes remaining in the contest.
