Two Phantoms Selected in 2019 NHL Draft
YOUNGSTOWN, OH- The day after 9 USHL players were selected in the 1st round of the 2019 NHL draft, two Youngstown Phantoms had their names called after being selected in the 6th round of the NHL draft. By the end of the 7 round NHL draft the USHL had set another record as 52 players who played in the league last season.
Jack Malone who has skated as a Phantom for the last 2 seasons was selected in the 6th round - 180th overall by the Vancouver Canucks. This past season Malone scored 19 goals and put up 40 assists for the Phantoms. During the season he was also selected to play for Team USA at the World Jr.A Challenge, where he brought home a Gold medal. He was also selected to play in the USHL/NHL Top Prospects Game. Jack will continue his hockey career at Cornell next season.
"Not only was Jack the dominant player that we had hoped for, he was a pillar of a person away from the rink. He earns everything he gets and he deserves it tenfold. We are all excited to see his career evolve as he has a special set of ingredients that usually contribute to long and successful careers." - Coach Patterson
It was an unbelievable feeling to be drafted and could not be more excited to get to Vancouver. It was an exciting day for my family, and we are so lucky to have so much support. I can't thank the Phantoms organization enough for developing me from a boy to a young man these past two years. I wouldn't be here without my coaches, teammates, billets, and friends. - Jack Malone
Dominic Basse will quickly become a name that fans in the Valley will remember, as he will begin his first season here in September. Dominic was selected in the 6th round - 167th overall by the Chicago Blackhawks. Last year Dominic frequently travelled to Youngstown to practice with the Phantoms all while he attended school and played for Selects Academy in South Kent, CT.
"We couldn't be happier for Dom and his family. We are obviously thrilled to see Dom full time this year, he is a tremendous goaltender who's skill set speaks for itself. A skilled, focused and driven goaltender is a goaltender that is hard to beat, and that is exactly what Dom brings to Youngstown." - Coach Patterson
I'm so excited and grateful to be drafted by THE Chicago Blackhawks. This has been a lifelong goal and dream of mine, made sweeter by the fact my Dad was born in Chicago and it's his favorite team! When I met the coaching staff and scouts they were incredible and I'm so humbled to be a part of such a legendary organization! I'm very excited to get to work, I've known all along this is a journey and I'm very grateful for the opportunity the Blackhawks have given me. So much thanks goes to my Goalie Coach: Jason Wolfe, all my teammates whom I've played with, my coaches and most of all my parents, who encouraged me to dream big, work hard and pursue my dream. We all did it!! #AMDG - Dominic Basse
The 2019 NHL Draft marks the sixth year in a row the Phantoms have had a player selected; the fifth year in which the Phantoms have had multiple players selected in the draft. With these two draft picks the Phantoms total now increases to 19 and will increase in the years to come.
