Two Invited To Camp From Open Tryouts

January 12, 2012 - Professional Indoor Football League (PIFL) - Columbus Lions News Release

COLUMBUS, GA, January 12 -- More than fifty Columbus Lions hopefuls displayed their skills for nearly three hours at open tryouts held last Saturday at the Columbus Civic Center, but just two were invited to report to Lions training camp next month.

Tight end-defensive end Gabe McKenzie of Auburn (6-foot-3, 250 pounds) and defensive back Alan Strong of Vanderbilt (5-foot-9, 185 pounds) sufficiently impressed Lions Head Coach Jason Gibson, joining Atlanta free agent wide receiver Michael Figgins, who reprised a successful September tryout, to earn camp invitations.

Gibson noted, in particular, the excellent time of 4.31 seconds Strong posted in the 40-yard dash, one of a number of drills all players were put through from 9 a.m. till noon, with several performing till nearly 1 p.m. Each player paid $40 to $50 registration fee.

The Lions camp, beginning February 20, will take place entirely at A.J. McClung Memorial Stadium next to the Civic Center, due to professional hockey and other events at the Civic Center. Camp culminates with the Lions' preseason exhibition game Sunday, March 4 at 6:00 p.m. against Team James of Atlanta, a collection of professional football prospects coached by player agent Marcus James. The game, played on the Lions' turf in the Civic Center will be a benefit for The United Way of the Chattahoochee Valley, which will receive 50% of gate receipts from group sales and individual ticket purchases.

Also last Saturday morning, the Lady Lions Dance Team conducted a dance camp for fifteen girls ages 8-13, many of whom stayed that afternoon to try out for the Junior Lady Lions Dance Team. Both groups perform dance and cheerleading routines during breaks at all Lions home games, and are managed by Lions co-owner Angela Wagenti.
