Tuck and Clarendon Named to USA Basketball World Cup Roster
SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Spain - Connecticut Sun forward Morgan Tuck and point guard Layshia Clarendon will both have the chance to play for a gold medal with the 2018 USA Basketball Women's National Team at the upcoming FIBA World Cup.
Tuck and Clarendon each learned they had made the official 12-player USA roster following a 70-60 scrimmage victory over Australia Wednesday.
"It means everything," Tuck said. "I've always wanted to play for the National Team, so being able to do it in a real competition, it means a lot. Playing on all the other USA teams when you're younger, that's what you're working for. My goal is still to play in the Olympics, but this is really close to that, and it feels really good."
Tuck averaged 9.2 points with six made three-pointers and 17 rebounders in five games with four starts. Clarendon started all five games for the USA, racking up 16 assists while averaging 4.8 points and 4.2 rebounds per game.
"I am incredibly proud for Morgan and Layshia," Connecticut Sun coach and general manager Curt Miller said. "They took full advantage of their opportunity and earned the right to represent USA basketball and their country. It will be an great experience for them, and will only help them continue to grow and develop as players."
At the 2018 FIBA World Cup, which begins on Sept. 22, the USA will be in the hunt for a third-straight FIBA World Cup gold - a feat it has never before accomplished.
"I was really nervous walking into the room where they were going to tell us," Clarendon said. "My heart was in my throat. You really never know. I said, 'Hey, I've done the best I can do. If it's not me, I'm at peace because I gave 110 percent to this.' It's kind of...I'm still in just in shock. You put the jersey on and think, 'Wow, I'm representing my country.'"
The USA opens against Senegal at 1 p.m. EDT on Sept. 22, followed by China at 1 p.m. EDT on Sept. 23 and Latvia at 1 p.m. on Sept. 25. All three of the USA's preliminary games will be televised on ESPN+.
