Trout Stay Hot Despite Winter Storm

January 18, 2020 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL) - Mississauga Steelheads News Release

Barrie, ON - The Mississauga Steelheads braved the winter storm as they traveled to Barrie to take on the Colts on Saturday evening. Mississauga came into the game coming off a big win against the Oshawa Generals, where James Hardie scored 2 goals, and Chas Sharpe scored the first goal of his OHL Career.

Barrie got on the board first, as Aidan Brown fed 2020 NHL Draft prospect Tyson Foerster with a breakaway pass, and he beat Kai Edmonds to make it 1-0. The Steelheads had an opportunity to tie the game on back to back powerplays, as Foerster was called for putting the puck over the glass and Tabak was called for cross checking. Mississauga took advantage of the powerplays and tied the game at one, as Nic Canade tipped a shot in front of the net from Thomas Harley. James Hardie, celebrating his 18th birthday, picked up a blocked shot off the stick of Canade to make it 2-1 Steelheads just over a minute later. After a slow start, the Steelheads rebounded to take the lead into the first intermission, while outshooting Barrie 12-9.

Both teams traded powerplays to start the second, with neither team being able to score. Midway through the period, Hardie snuck in behind Barrie's defence and received a breakaway pass from Harley, but he was stopped by the right pad of Jet Greaves. Mississauga continued to pile on the pressure, and they were rewarded as Calvin Martin picked up a rebound in the slot and redirected it past Greaves to make the score 3-1. With Barrie on a 5-on-3 powerplay, Tyson Foerster wired a wrist shot top corner for his second of the night to cut the Steelheads lead in half. As the seconds ticked down in the period, Evan Vierling rang a backhander off the crossbar on an odd man rush as Edmonds continued to stand his ground. Mississauga took a 3-2 lead into the third period, looking to finish off the weekend strong.

The Fish came out flying to start the third period, with multiple dangerous scoring chances, as they looked to build on their one goal lead. The Steelheads would not be denied after being stopped by Greaves on the doorstep, as Cole Schwindt made a nifty behind the net pass to the red hot Canade who scored his second goal of the game to make it 4-2. With the Colts net empty, Canade sent a shot the length of the ice for his third goal of the game and second hat-trick in the month of January. The Fish cruised to a victory by a final score of 5-2.

Nic Canade was the star of the game, as he registered 4 points (3G, 1A) and a career-high 9 shots on goal. Calvin Martin recorded 2 points (1G, 1A), increasing his point streak to an impressive 7-games. Thomas Harley (2A) and James Hardie (1G, 2A) were also amongst Steelheads who recorded multi-point games in the win. It was another strong performance from goaltender Kai Edmonds, who stopped 34/36 shots on goal (.944 SV%).

Mississauga finished the weekend with a 2-0 record, with wins in dominating fashion against both Barrie and Oshawa. With a Sudbury win today, the Steelheads win keeps them within four points of 1st place in the Central Division and in sole possession of 5th place in the Eastern Conference.
