Tomasino Scores Two Goals in World Junior Opener

Canada is off to a roaring start at the 2021 World Juniors in Edmonton, defeating a shorthanded German squad 16-2 in their tournament opener.

Oshawa Generals forward Philip Tomasino scored twice and added an assist, finishing with a plus-4 rating while newly minted alternate captain Connor McMichael of the London Knights tallied a goal and two assists. Mississauga Steelheads defender Thomas Harley and Saginaw Spirit centreman Ryan Suzuki also found the scoresheet while teammate Cole Perfetti finished with three assists.

Buffalo Sabres prospect Dylan Cozens (Lethbridge Hurricanes) earned Player of the Game recognition for Canada with three goals and three assists while Peyton Krebs (Winnipeg ICE), Dawson Mercer (Chicoutimi Sagueneens) and Alex Newhook each scored twice.

London Knights CHL Import Draft Selection John Peterka was one of two Germans with a multi-point finish, collecting a goal and an assist in the lopsided defeat.

Canada's seven-goal second period tied an all-time Canadian World Junior record set in 1999 against Kazakhstan.

Canada outshot Germany 44-15, with the Germans down several skaters who were finishing up quarantine periods as part of COVID-19 protocols. Canada improves to 15-0-0 against Germany in the tournament all-time, outscoring them 91-21 in the process.

Action continues on Sunday with Canada (0-1) facing-off against Slovakia (1-0) at 6:00pm ET. The Germans will have the day off before returning to face Slovakia on Monday at 9:30pm ET.
