To be or not to Farabee

PLYMOUTH, MI - The Madison Capitols fell to the Team USA, 10-3, at USA Hockey Arena on Thursday night.

Madison (20-25-2-2) is ranked eighth in the Eastern Conference with 44 points. Team USA (33-12-0-1) leads the Eastern Conference with 67 points.

Team USA took a 4-0 lead with center Alex Turcotte's eighth goal of the season at 15:52 of the opening stanza. Skating on the power play, defenseman Adam Samuelsson passed the puck from the center point to left wing Cole Caufield at the left wing half-wall. Caufield found Turcotte open between the hash-marks for a snap shot into the top right corner of the net.

Defenseman Cam York picked up his third goal of the season at 2:51 of the opening frame to give Team USA a 1-0 lead. Center Jake Wise stole the puck from the Capitols along the right wing half-wall and handed the puck over to York. The blueliner took a couple strides toward goaltender Dryden McKay before wristing a shot past the netminder's glove and into the net.

Left wing Joel Farabee doubled Team USA's lead to 2-0 with his 12 goal of the season at 10:29 of the first period. Farabee stole the puck in the neutral zone and skated down the ice. The forward slipped the puck past McKay before charging over him.

Left wing Gavin Hain one-timed the puck, five-hole on the goaltender, for his seventh goal of the season and a 3-0 lead. Turcotte carried the puck behind the Capitols net before centering it to Hain for the one-timer at 12:42 of the first period.

Caufield picked up a goal of his own at 6:39 of the middle frame. Wise passed the puck from the left wing to Farabee between the hash marks. Farabee kicked the puck with his right skate over to Caufield at the right doorstep for the one-timer and his 22nd goal of the season for a 5-0 lead.

Farabee scored his second goal of the night at 7:09 of the second period. Samuelsson tossed the puck from the left wing to Farabee near the left doorstep. Farabee flipped the puck behind him and it deflected off a Capitols player and past McKay for a 6-0 advantage.

The Capitols got on the board with center Ludwig Stenlund's 13th goal of the season at 9:23 of the second stanza. Stenlund carried the puck down the right wing and cut toward the net. At the right doorstep, Stenlund flipped the puck into the right corner of the cage to end goaltender Spencer Knight's shutout bid.

Goaltender Joey Lamoreaux replaced McKay between the piped for the Capitols. McKay took a shot off his mask and headed to the locker room for treatment.

Defenseman Mattias Samuelsson netted his fourth goal of the season for Team USA at 18:10 of the second period. Center Jack Hughes skated in on Lamoreaux and wristed a shot on the netminder. Lamoreaux made the save pad but Samuelsson buried the rebound to bring the score to 7-1.

Hughes picked up his 16th USHL goal of the season at 18:51 of the middle period to advance Team USA's lead to 8-1. Hughes carried the puck down the right wing, faked a shot and then snapped the puck into the top left corner of the net.

Center Jonathan Gruden carried the puck down the left wing and wristed a shot between Lamoreaux's legs for his 12th goal of the season at 5:20 of the third period.

Left wing Mick Messner scored his 14th goal of the season at 11:10 of the final frame. Messner intercepted a clearing pass along the right wing half-wall. The forward patiently waited before sneaking the puck between Knight and the right goal post to bring the score to 9-2.

Center Michael Mancinelli broke in on Knight all alone for his 14 goal of the season at 14:22 of the final stanza. Mancinelli picked up a pass from defenseman Michael Schumacher and carried the puck behind the defense and snapped a shot into the net to bring the score to 9-3.

Team USA finished the game with left wing Tyler Weiss' third goal of the season at 17:47 of the third period. Defenseman Spencer Stastney passed the puck to Turcotte who had his stick lifted to the left of the net. Turcotte regained control and passed the puck back to Weiss who slipped the puck between Lamoreaux's legs for the final goal of the game.

McKay (18-20-1-2) suffered his 20th loss of the season with 15 saves on 21 shots. Lamoreaux (2-5-1-0) stopped 21-of-25 shots in relief duty. Knight (11-3-0-0) earned his 11th win of the season stopping 28-of-31 shots.

Madison went 0-for-4 on the power play. Team USA was 1-for-4 with the man advantage.

Notables: The Capitols are on a two-game losing streak...Team USA clinched a playoff spot with the win tonight...Center Ludwig Stenlund has four goals and two assists in his last six games.

The team will return home to face-off against the Muskegon Lumberjacks during Ronald McDonald House Charities Night at 7:05 p.m. on Friday, March 23.
