Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The TinCaps won in walk-off fashion Saturday night in front of a sellout crowd of 7,374 at Parkview Field after a wild pitch brought left fielder Robbie Podorsky home to defeat the Great Lakes Loons (Los Angeles Dodgers), 2-1.
The bases were loaded in the bottom of the ninth for shortstop Gabriel Arias. On the fourth pitch of the at-bat, a breaking ball from hard-throwing right-handed reliever Aneurys Zabala went in the dirt got past Great Lakes catcher Darrell Miller, allowing Podorsky to score from third.
Podorsky led the frame off with a single pulled to left. He then stole second base. The Loons elected to intentionally walk right fielder Tirso Ornelas. DH Justin Lopez put down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position. Great Lakes walked second baseman Esteury Ruiz to set the scene for Arias' at-bat.
This was the TinCaps' first walk-off win since May 19 against South Bend, when Gabriel Arias hit an RBI single to give Fort Wayne a 5-4 win over the South Bend Cubs.
Fort Wayne (31-37) broke the scoring seal in the second inning. After a double from Ruiz, Arias singled to center field, scoring Ruiz and putting the TinCaps up, 1-0.
Great Lakes (24-43) answered in the top of the fourth. Jared Walker doubled to right field and advanced to third on a flyball. Eric Peterson followed with a single to left field to score Walker and tie the game, 1-1.
In the bottom of the ninth the TinCaps loaded the bases with a Podorsky single and stolen base, followed by an intentional walk, a sacrifice bunt and another intentional walk to set up for the walk-off wild pitch.
In the win, TinCaps starting pitcher MacKenzie Gore made his second start since coming off the DL on June 10. Gore went three innings, allowed just one hit, no runs and struck out five batters. Gore's fastball topped out at 95 miles per hour. Of his 39 pitches, 28 were strikes.
After the 19-year-old left-hander, Aaron Leasher (three innings), Caleb Boushley (two innings), and Travis Radke (one inning) combined to hold Great Lakes to six hits and just one run.
The TinCaps finish the first half of the season on Sunday and with a win can sweep this three-game series.
