South Bend Cubs News Release

Fort Wayne, IN: Cubs starter Cory Abbott finished Saturday with six scoreless innings, a career high 11 strikeouts, and in position to win his third game of the season. He departed after the 6th inning with a 3-0 lead.

Abbott struck out the side in the bottom of the 6th to cap off his evening by hanging a zero. The right hander's cutter was dominant and mixed well with his low-90s fastball and a hard breaking slider.

Unfortunately for Abbott, and the South Bend Cubs, he had to take a no decision after South Bend was not able to hang onto the lead. With four runs in the bottom of the 7th inning, the Fort Wayne TinCaps came alive and took their first lead of the night.

After making seven errors in game one of the series last night, the Cubs made just one on Saturday, but it did turn out to be costly. With two runs already scored in the inning, Fort Wayne capitalized on a throwing error made by third baseman Austin Filiere where the throw brought the first baseman Jared Young off the bag, allowing Justin Lopez to score.

The inning continued as the TinCaps pulled off a double steal shortly after the error. With Robbie Podorsky at first base, and Jack Suwinski at third, catcher Miguel Amaya threw down to second to try and catch Podorsky stealing. The throw bounced into center field off the glove of Rafael Narea. Suwinski came home easily scoring Fort Wayne's fourth run.

Fort Wayne took the 4-3 lead to the top of the 9th inning. South Bend pulled off the comeback to force extra innings after Jhonny Bethencourt brought in Zach Davis on a game tying double. The Cubs tied the game 4-4 and took the game into the 10th.

With the bases loaded in their half of the 10th inning, South Bend failed to score and allowed the TinCaps to come up with a chance to win.

First baseman Jalen Washington started the inning at second base for Fort Wayne with the new extra innings rule. After being moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, reliever Brian Glowicki allowed the game winning hit to Gabriel Arias on a line drive single up the middle into center field.

Fort Wayne took the walk-off win 5-4. The Cubs loss now brings them to 17-23 on the campaign. They have now lost four straight games dating back to their previous away series in Lake County.

South Bend will look to salvage the final game of the series and avoid the sweep tomorrow afternoon at 1:05 p.m. in Fort Wayne. Right hander Erich Uelmen is scheduled to start for the Cubs.
