TinCaps Cool Off Dragons

April 21, 2018 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The TinCaps cooled off the hottest team in baseball on Saturday afternoon at Parkview Field. Fort Wayne defeated the Dayton Dragons (Cincinnati Reds), 8-2, to snap Dayton's nine-game winning streak.

TinCaps (5-11) right fielder Tirso Ornelas hit a three-run homer to right field three batters into the bottom of the first inning to give his team as many runs as they would wind up needing. For the 18-year-old Ornelas, it was his second home run of the season, and first at Parkview Field.

Left-hander Osvaldo Hernandez was terrific on the mound for the 'Caps. He allowed only one run in five innings as he struck out six.

While each side traded a run in the fifth, the TinCaps took control of the game with a two-out rally in the sixth. Second baseman Reinaldo Ilarraza and center fielder Jeisson Rosario both provided run-scoring singles, and third baseman Esteury Ruiz followed with a two-run shot to the seats in left to make it 8-1. Like for Ornelas, it was Ruiz's second homer of the year, and first at home.

Lefty Ben Sheckler yielded only one unearned run across three innings of relief and Jordan Guerrero recorded the final three outs in the ninth.

The TinCaps are now 3-2 on their six-game homestand that concludes Sunday afternoon.
