Portland Timbers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - Portland Timbers defender Scot Thompson and midfielder Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar today were selected to the USL First Division's All-League First Team, while forward Dan Antoniuk was picked for the All-League Second Team, it was announced by United Soccer Leagues.
Voted in by the league's coaches and general managers, the three Portland selections were second only to Montreal (4) for most representatives from a single team. The Minnesota Thunder also garnered three picks.
Thompson missed only two starts this season while trying out for Sunderland AFC after impressing in an exhibition match against the English Premier League side on July 23. With the Timbers, the second-year defender tallied four goals and two assists to earn his first all-league honor.
Alcaraz-Cuellar set a new personal high for assists in a season with 12, marking the second consecutive year that the midfielder paced the USL First Division in that department. The Timbers' all-time USL assist leader with 39 over the past four seasons, Alcaraz-Cuellar added a goal to his assist total this season to finish with 14 points.
Alcaraz-Cuellar was named to the league's second team in 2004.
Antoniuk, a third-year Timber, took advantage of his first season as a starter up front, hitting for 13 goals to lead the club and place fourth in the league. The 6-foot-3 striker also counted his first career hat trick, Sept. 8 vs. Atlanta, and scored five times over the final three matches of the regular season.
The Timbers' first-round playoff series with the Seattle Sounders kicks off Friday at PGE Park. Kickoff is 7 p.m. (Pacific).
