Portland Timbers News Release

LOS ANGELES - The Portland Timbers battled Los Angles FC to a 0-0 draw before 22,000 fans at Banc of California Stadium on Sunday afternoon. With the draw, the Timbers extended their unbeaten run to 14 games across all competitions, while also logging their seventh clean sheet across all competitions in 2018.

Recent form

With the result, the Timbers (8-3-6, 30pts) are tied with FC Dallas for the fewest losses (3) in the league this season. Additionally, Portland's 14-game unbeaten run across all competitions ranks as the longest unbeaten streak in MLS since the New York Red Bulls went 16 games without a loss across all competitions during the 2016 MLS campaign. Overall, Portland's 14-game (10-0-4) unbeaten streak is tied for the second longest streak in club history across all eras (since 1975). The draw extended Portland's league unbeaten streak to 12 straight games.

Facing LAFC

Portland leads the regular season, head-to-head series between both clubs 1-0-1, previously defeating LAFC (10-4-5, 35pts) 2-1 at Providence Park on May 19. Sunday's result also signified the first time LAFC - the league's highest scoring team - has been held scoreless at Banc of California Stadium.

Timbers defense

With 22 goals allowed, the Timbers are tied for the second-fewest goals conceded in the league in 2018. Additionally, goalkeeper Jeff Attinella tallied his fifth clean sheet in regular-season action on Sunday, marking a career-high for the goalkeeper.

Key plays

Portland created a chance early in the first half when midfielder Diego Valeri was able to find space in the box in a one-on-one chance, with the midfielder forcing a strong save from goalkeeper Tyler Miller in the fourth minute of play.

Six minutes later, Valeri created another chance when he found an opportunistic ball in the 18-yard box, blasting a shot to the near post that forced a last-ditch tackle to deflect his strike wide for a corner.

Continuing to create chances in the first half, Portland had another opportunity to take the lead in the 29th minute of play when midfielder Sebastián Blanco fired from distance, forcing another solid save from Miller in the 29th minute.

Later in the first half, with LAFC attempting to pressure the Timbers, Attinella made a strong save on forward Adama Diomande's close range volley, pushing the striker's effort off the crossbar and away from danger in the 31st minute.

Early in the second half, Portland produced its most dangerous chance to score when defender Zarek Valentin slipped the ball in behind for striker Samuel Armenteros, who struck the post from the left side of the six-yard box just three minutes into the second half.

Attacking on the break, the Timbers threatened the home side's goal once again when Armenteros played a clever back heel for Blanco, who struck a strong effort that forced a difficult save for Miller in the 70th minute.

With six minutes left in the game, LAFC midfielder Lee Nguyen was shown a straight red card for a violent challenge on Blanco, reducing the home side to 10 men in the 84th minute.

In the final moments of the game, Attinella recorded his sixth save of the match to preserve the clean sheet, reacting quickly to make a strong save on forward Carlos Vela's header in the 93rd minute.
