Timbers Conclude Concacaf Champions League Run with 3-1 Road Loss to Club América

MEXICO CITY - The Portland Timbers' run in the 2021 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League came to an end with a 3-1 loss against Club América in the second leg of the quarterfinals at Estadio Azteca on Wednesday night. Diego Valeri scored the lone goal in the match for Portland, converting a penalty kick in the second half.

The two teams played to a 1-1 draw in the first leg at Providence Park on April 28. América advanced 4-2 on aggregate, winning the second leg to advance to the semifinals.

Champions League Review

Portland made its deepest CCL run in club history by advancing to the quarterfinals in 2021. It marked the club's third appearance in the tournament after featuring in the 2014-15 and 2016-17 editions of the competition. In 2021 tournament, the Timbers scored in all four matches, posting a record of 2-1-2 across the campaign.

Valeri In CCL

Valeri recorded his fourth career goal in CCL play with Portland in the match. His four goals are tied for the most by a Timbers player in CCL play in the club's history. The goal was his second of the 2021 tournament.

Goal-Scoring Plays

AME - Federico Viñas (Mauro Laínez), 21st minute: Federico Viñas played a cross into the box from the left wing and Mauro Laínez directed a header from the center of the box inside the right post.

AME - Federico Viñas (penalty kick), 59th minute: After Portland was whistled for a foul inside the box, Viñas stepped to the spot and fired a shot into the bottom left corner of the goal.

POR - Diego Valeri (penalty kick), 64th minute: Yimmi Chara played a perfectly-weighted through ball into the box for Felipe Mora, who was fouled on his shot attempt, earning a penalty for the Timbers. Diego Valeri converted the penalty-kick attempt into upper left corner.

AME - Leonardo Suárez (Pedro Aquino), 70th minute: After receiving a pass from Pedro Aquino, Leonardo Suárez dribbled across the top of the box and curled his shot into the lower left corner inside the left post.

Notes

Diego Valeri scored his 98th career goal for the Timbers.

Valeri has scored four goals in Concacaf Champions League play with two coming this season.

Valeri has a combined 200 goals plus assists in all competitions for the Timbers.

The match was the first time in team history that the Timbers played in Mexico. Mexico is the eighth FIFA nation that Portland has played in, joining the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, Honduras, Guyana, El Salvador, and Costa Rica.

The Timbers were appearing in the quarterfinals of the competition for the first time.

Jeremy Ebobisse, Zac McGraw and Andy Polo made their Concacaf Champions League debuts.

Next Game

Portland returns home to play host to Cascadia rival Seattle Sounders FC on Sunday, May 9, at Providence Park. The May 9 match kicks off at 12 noon (Pacific) and features a national television broadcast on ABC with local radio broadcasts on 750 The Game (English) and La GranD 1150AM/93.5 FM (Spanish).
