Tiger-Cats to Launch 'TELUS Earn Your Stripes' Program this Fall
September 13, 2018 - Canadian Football League (CFL)
Hamilton Tiger-Cats News Release
The Hamilton Tiger-Cats, in partnership with TELUS, announced Tuesday the launch of a new community initiative called 'TELUS Earn Your Stripes', which will see Ticats players visit schools to teach students in grades four to six about online safety. Beginning this fall, TELUS Earn Your Stripes will draw upon the robust workshop materials and content available through TELUS' digital media literacy program, TELUS Wise.
Ticats players delivering the TELUS Earn Your Stripes program will share insights and personal experiences to help Canadian students have a positive online experience. The program covers topics such as keeping your digital footprint clean, rising above cyberbullying, and protecting and positively growing your online reputation. These are all elements of TELUS' national TELUS Wise program.
"Growing up playing football has given me the opportunity to be surrounded by many coaches and positive influencers on my life," said Tiger-Cats linebacker and TELUS Earn Your Stripes ambassador Larry Dean. "One of the things I learned at a young age was how to be a good sport both on and off the field. I'm looking forward to sharing the TELUS Earn Your Stripes Program with the Hamilton children and teaching them the positive impact they can have when they bring good sportsmanship online."
TELUS launched TELUS Wise, a free educational program focusing on digital safety, in 2013. The program offers Canadians of all ages interactive and informative workshops and resources. Specialized content is available for youth in grades two to six, youth in grades six to 12, adults, parents and even seniors.
"TELUS Wise is proud to partner with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on this exciting initiative. While today's youth are digitally savvy, they are still in need of guidance as it pertains to making the right choices online," said Nimtaz Kanji, Director, TELUS Wise. "Providing Hamilton youth the opportunity to learn these important skills from Ticats players will be a powerful experience and will go a long way in shaping them into thoughtful digital citizens."
TELUS Earn Your Stripes will kick off this fall with visits to schools throughout Hamilton, starting Monday, September 17 at Ryerson Heights Elementary School.
