Tides Stifle Clippers 7-2

August 19, 2013 - International League (IL1)
Columbus Clippers News Release

The Clippers' bats went cold as the Tides defeated Columbus 7-2 at Huntington Park.

Henry Urrutia got the Tides on the board with solo homer over the Wendy's Hamburger Balcony in the top of the third. Norfolk later lengthened their lead with a four run fourth inning. RBI singles by Chris Snyder and Jason Pridie and a two run single by Yamaico Navarro made up the scoring during the frame.

Daisuke Matsuzaka did not last long in this game for Columbus. He was roughed up for five runs on eight hits while striking out six and walking three in four innings of work.

On the other side, Tides righty Kevin Gausman baffled the Clippers. Gausman struck out seven and shut out the Clippers on two hits in five frames of work.

The Clippers finally got on the board with an RBI double by Juan Diaz in the bottom of seventh. Unfortunately, Norfolk got that run back and then some in the top of the eighth with an RBI sacrifice fly by Snyder and an RBI single by Navarro.

Despite an RBI sacrifice fly by Ryan Rohinger in the bottom of the ninth, it was not nearly enough as Columbus managed only four hits on the entire night against Norfolk pitching. Gausman (W, 1-2) was the winning pitcher in the contest. Matsuzaka (L, 5-8) was dealt the loss.

The Tides and Clippers will conclude their four game set with an afternoon tilt at Huntington Park on Tuesday. Right-hander Paulo Espino (3-4, 4.06) will start on the mound for Columbus. Norfolk will counter with righty Steve Johnson (1-2, 4.45). First pitch is scheduled for 12:05 PM.
