Clearwater Threshers News Release
CLEARWATER:The Clearwater Threshers ran over the visiting Brevard County Manatees in a 13-1 rout Friday night in front of 1,905 fans at Bright House Field.
The Threshers (7-8) jumped out early, chasing opposing starter Jed Bradley (1-1) with five runs in the bottom of the first inning, and drove in eight runs in the bottom of the fifth to put the game well out of reach. The Manatees (9-6) walked three batters in the first inning alone, and six total, hampering their ability to restrict the Clearwater offense.
Shortstop Jose Mojica led the charge for the Threshers with three hits, a run scored and two RBI. His batting average stands at an even .500 after the win. Center fielder Aaron Altherr hit a double, walked three times, scored twice and drove in two runs. Right fielder Cameron Perkins knocked two doubles, scored a one and knocked in another. Every Threshers starter collected a hit in the win.
Nick Hernandez (2-0) tossed six superb innings for the win, allowing a run on four hits and a walk while striking out seven. The lone run came on a solo homer from Manatees catcher Cameron Garfield, his fifth round-tripper of 2013. Gabriel Arias threw two scoreless frames, allowing a hit and whiffing two. Mike Nesseth gave up one hit in his inning of relief, striking out one and allowing no walks or runs.
Bradley took the loss, giving up five runs (two earned) on three hits and three walks while retiring only two in his start. Chad Pierce surrendered four runs on five hits and three walks in 3.2 innings of work, striking out three. Tyler Cravy allowed four runs (two earned) on five hits over 1.2 frames. Tommy Toledo and Seth Harvey each tossed a scoreless inning of relief. Brevard County committed three errors in the game, contributing to their struggles.
The Threshers and Manatees will square off in the rubber match of the three-game series Saturday, with southpaw Hoby Milner starting for Clearwater against Brevard County righty Drew Gagnon. There'll be fireworks after the game, as there will be for all Saturday home games for the Threshers this year! Gates open at 5:30 p.m., and first pitch is at 6:30, with Ben Gellman's pregame show on ThreshersBaseball.com starting at 6:15.
