Three WhiteWings Win United League Media Association Gold Glove Awards

Harlingen, TX - Three first half champion Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings - Alejandro Martinez (first base), Omar Bramasco (shortstop) and Sam McLain (left field) won Gold Gloves while manager Eddie Dennis, slugger Ryan Fox, starter Joe Rogers and closer Derek Bennett received votes in other United League Media Association Award voting as announced today by The Town Talk newspaper in Alexandria, LA.

Martinez committed just two errors this season in 57 games at first base. He showed off an ability to scoop balls out of the dirt and making diving stops of scorchers to his right.

Bramasco committed 16 errors in 84 games at short stop, showing off incredible range both up the middle and into the third base hole. Bramasco also displayed a strong and accurate arm.

McLain committed five errors in 68 games in left field. He rarely misplayed a ball while taking good routes. McLain showed off a strong arm in addition to his glove.

The WhiteWings committed a league-low 108 errors this season and were one of only two teams to get three gold glovers (Alexandria was the other).

Dennis received two first-place votes and finishing with 28 total points in the Doc Edwards Manager of the Year Award voting, just four behind winner Ricky VanAsselberg of Alexandria (five first-place votes). Dennis managed the WhiteWings to the first half championship with a 29-21 record. He also led them to 50 wins this season, 12 more than last year.

Fox finished sixth in the United League Most Valuable Player Award voting, finishing with 12 points. Edinburg's Nelson Teilon ran away with the voting by totaling 66 points and four first-place votes.

Fox set a United League single-season record by hitting 23 home runs this season, the same number he hit in his first three years of professional baseball combined. Fox also hit a career-high .275 with 83 RBI, a total larger than his career mark entering this season. He was also third in the league in RBI, second in doubles (29), third in slugging percentage (.565) and second in extra-base hits (52).

Rogers finished fourth (32 points) and Bennett finished sixth (ten points, one first-place votes) in the Mike Smith Pitcher of the Year Award voting.

Rogers leads active pitchers with 11 wins. He finished third in the league in ERA (3.25), tied for first in complete games (four), third in innings pitched (121.2), He struck out 95 while walking just 23.

Bennett allowed just five runs (three earned) in 38 innings this season while shutting the door in 22 of his 24 save opportunities. He did not allow an earned run until the 74th game of the season.
