Three Goal Third Proves Difference for Youngstown

November 7, 2020 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release

Youngstown used a three goal third period to pull away from the Fighting Saints late and win 5-3 on Saturday night. Cole Burtch scored twice, including the game winner with less than three minutes left in regulation. The Saints fell to 0-2 on the season in the loss.

-Youngstown swarmed the Saints out of the gates, netting the first two goals of the game. Youngstown scored in a span of 12 seconds in the first period as Cole Burtch and Bradley Marek pushed pucks past Aidan McCarthy.

-Youngstown found themselves shorthanded for five minutes in the first as Cade Lemmer was ejected for a questionable hit on Henry Thrun. The Saints couldn't capitalize and Youngstown clamped down the rest of the way on defense to exit the period with a two goal lead.

-A theme for the Saints this season could be offense from the defense. Dubuque showed flashes of this in the preseason and it showed up in a big way in the second period. Michael Feenstra started the scoring with a rip from the point as the teams skated four aside.

-Quickly after that, Dylan Herzog blasted a shot of the post that would have tied the game. Dubuque got some puck luck after that though, as Tommy Middleton wobbled a shot from the point along the ice and in for the Saints second of the night.

-Late in the period Dubuque was able to take the lead for the first time as Evan Stella scored his first of the season. Stella was aided by good work from Riley Stuart and Reggie Millette and scored the goal well below the circles to give Dubuque the lead, 3-2 heading into the final regulation frame.

-Youngstown scored three times in the third period to rally against Dubuque as the Phantoms won their lone game of the weekend.

-Georgii Merkulov scored on a spin-o-rama to tie things up at the halfway part of the period.

-Youngstown took the lead for good as they netted a late power play goal on a slick feed from Merkulov. Burtch scored his second of the game and it ended up as the game winner.

-Hillman scored late for the Phantoms on an empty-netter as he also blocked four shots on the final shift to kill off a Saints power play.

-Dubuque faces off against Youngstown again next weekend for the only game of their week as they drop the puck Friday at 7:05pm
