Three Goal Second Helps Youngstown Beat Dubuque

Ben Schoen scored twice for Youngstown and the Phantoms beat Dubuque for the second time this season, 5-2 on Friday night. John Evans scored his first USHL goal in his first USHL game but a three goal second from Youngstown spelled doom for Dubuque.
-Dubuque carried the play in the first period, throwing 14 shots on goal to Youngstown's six. Dubuque was able to get traffic in front of the Phantoms goalie Mattias Sholl but he looked very strong between the pipes.
-Hobie Hequist was very good for the Saints in the first as well. He only had to stop six shots but made a few key saves late in the period and against the Youngstown penalty kill unit.
-Youngstown was 0-1 on the PP in the first period and the Saints were 0-2 as both teams performed well on the PK.
-Youngstown looked like a totally different team in the second period as they blitzed the Saints for two goals in the first four minutes. Riley Duran and Nate Hanley scored with just a minute separating the two goals to give Youngstown a quick lead.
-The Phantoms extended their lead to three at about the midway mark of the period as Bennett Zmolek scored his second goal of the season on a great net-front feed.
-After the third Phantoms goal, Hedquist was chased from the net and Aidan McCarthy stepped in. McCarthy had some big saves late in the period to keep the Fighting Saints down by just three and Dubuque got a strong chance from Stephen Halliday in the last three minutes that just went wide.
-Dubuque found some offensive life in the third period as they were able to get their only two goals of the game in the final 20 minutes. John Evans picked up his first USHL goal to bring Dubuque within two about seven minutes into the frame.
-Youngstown answered and iced the game effectively with a Ben Schoen goal to make it 4-1. Schoen notched two points and continues to pour in goals with six in 10 games for the Phantoms.
-Primo Self tallied his second goal in as many games to bring the game within two again but that's as close as Dubuque would get. Self scored off a carom in front from a Daniyal Dzhaniyev shot.
-Dubuque has one more in Youngstown tomorrow night. After that, the Saints host Waterloo on Friday the 15th and then switch over to Des Moines on Saturday. It will be the only home weekend this season that doesn't feature an Eastern Conference team for Dubuque.
