Tampa Pitching Bounces Back in 3-1 Win

April 14, 2015 - Florida State League (FSL) - Tampa Yankees News Release

TAMPA - The Tampa Yankees (3-3) used four pitchers to limit the Fort Myers Miracle (3-3) to one run on five hits as the T-Yanks picked up their first home win of the 2015 season, 3-1, on Tuesday afternoon at George M. Steinbrenner Field.

RHPs Melvin Morla and Chad Taylor got their first taste of High-A baseball after being called up from Extended Spring Training this morning.

Morla got the start and pitched three shutout innings, allowing one hit and three walks. The right-hander stranded the bases loaded in the second and picked up one strikeout in a no-decision.

Tampa got on the board in the second after Danny Oh reached on an error by Miracle first baseman Michael Quesada with one out. Angelo Gumbs and Ericson Leonora followed with consecutive singles, with Leonora picking up the RBI.

A fourth-inning rally provided the winning runs for the Yankees. Mike Ford, Oh, Gumbs and Leonora all singled with one out, as Gumbs and Leonora drove in Ford and Oh, respectfully.

Fort Myers' starter Luke Westphal (0-1) allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits in three and a third innings. The southpaw struck out five and didn't walk anyone.

RHP Andrew Bailey (1-0) picked up the win for Tampa after pitching a scoreless fourth. The two-time A.L. All Star worked around a leadoff double and picked up a strikeout in his second relief appearance of the season.

Taylor surrendered the lone Miracle run in the fifth on a two-out RBI single by Alex Swim. Taylor struck out three in his first appearance with Tampa.

Angel Rincon faced the minimum in three and a third hitless innings for Tampa. The righty struck out a pair and walked one batter (erased by a double-play in the ninth), earning his first save of the season.

Gumbs and Leonora combined to go 4-for-6 with three RBI. Ford doubled and scored a run, going 2-for-4.

The Yankees begin a seven-game road trip on Wednesday as they travel to Fort Myers to finish the four-game series. RHP Rookie Davis (0-0, 1.50 ERA) is scheduled to pitch for Tampa, with RHP Kohl Stewart (0-1, 3.00 ERA) countering for the Miracle.
