Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Lucas May and Jamie Hoffmann drove home eighth inning runs while Suns starter James McDonald out dueled Mudcats starter Chris Volstad, leading the Jacksonville Suns (15-17) to a 2-0 Tuesday night victory over the Carolina Mudcats (18-14) in front of 3,563 at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
Tanyon Sturtze (1-1) picked up the win for the Suns after one relief inning with one hit, one walk and two strikeouts. Carolina starter Chris Volstad (3-1) fell in the loss after seven and one-thirds innings, allowing two runs on four hits with six walks and three strikeouts. Edwardo Sierra (2) saved the game for Jacksonville with a one-hit ninth inning.
Suns starter James McDonald and Mudcats starter Chris Volstad dueled throughout the first seven innings. McDonald scattered five Carolina hits in seven scoreless innings while striking out nine Carolina batters, tying a season-high. The seven inning start was the longest for any Suns pitcher.
Volstad allowed only two hits in his first seven innings, while issuing five walks. The six-foot-seven right-hander found his way out of two different bases loaded situations, the second and fourth innings, both with two out.
Jacksonville finally broke though against Volstad in the eighth inning. Ivan DeJesus, Jr. led off the frame with a single and moved to second base on an Adam Godwin sacrifice bunt. Following a Greg Jacobs walk, Lucas May singled to left-centerfield, scoring DeJesus, Jr. for a 1-0 Suns lead. Volstad left the game after giving up an intentional walk to Russell Mitchell to load the bases. Jamie Hoffmann next hit a sacrifice fly off of reliever Chris Mobley, opening a 2-0 Jacksonville lead.
Carolina put the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning after a two-out single off of reliever Edwardo Sierra, but a foul out from Kris Harvey ended the game.
Suns RH Danny Muegge will face Mudcats LH Aaron Thompson Wednesday at 1:05 p.m. at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. Wednesday is the Businessperson's Special, when $14 will buy a box seat, hot dog and large beverage, sponsored by Comcast, the Florida Times-Union and WOKV AM 690 and 106.5 FM. Tickets are available through the Suns box office at (904) 358-2846 or by visiting jaxsuns.com.
