Suns Fall 4-0, Drop Series to Lookouts

Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville Suns and Chattanooga Lookouts exchanged zeroes for eight innings until the Lookouts broke through with four runs in the ninth, handing the Suns their first series loss of the season by a final of 4-0.

Robert Morey provided an encouraging sign in his return from the 7-day disabled list, tossing five and two thirds scoreless innings, but Jacksonville's offense could not support him, coming up empty against Chattanooga.

No one from either team crossed home plate until Miguel Rojas' line drive in the top of the ninth off Edgar Olmos (3-1) sailed just over the outstretched glove of Danny Black, scoring J.T. Wise to put the Lookouts ahead 1-0. With two outs in the inning, Rafael Ynoa doubled home a pair of runs, and Joc Pederson followed with an RBI double of his own to close out the scoring.

It was a frustrating night at the plate for the Suns, and never more than in the bottom of the eighth inning. With the game still scoreless, Marcell Ozuna singled to begin the frame and stole second base with nobody out and Derek Dietrich at the plate. With Ozuna in scoring position, Dietrich swung and missed at a pitch from Hector Nelo (1-0) for strike three.

The ball, however, skipped by catcher Griff Erickson and went to the backstop, allowing Dietrich to reach first and Ozuna to go to third. Lookouts manager Jody Reed argued the call, and the umpires convened before ruling that Dietrich was out on batter's interference, sending Ozuna back to second base. Suns manager Andy Barkett argued the reversal and eventually was ejected for the first time in 2013.

"I disagreed with the call," Barkett said following the game. "It changed the complexion of the game. I just disagreed with their ruling."

Jacksonville managed just four hits against a trio of Lookouts pitchers, beginning with starter Rob Rasmussen, who shut out the Suns over five and a third innings while striking out eight.

His counterpart, Morey, made his return from a blister problem that had forced him to miss his last scheduled start in Pensacola, showing no ill effects. Morey worked out of several jams and did not surrender a run, striking out three before being lifted with two outs in the top of the sixth.

"[Morey] pitched a really good game, kept us in it," Barkett said. "He gave us a chance, gave us...strong innings. Not much else you can ask for."

The defeat clinched the first series loss of the season for the Suns (10-8), who have scored just seven runs in the first four games of the five-game set.

The series wraps up on Wednesday at 1:05 p.m at Bragan Field at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. The Suns will send left-hander Adam Conley (0-0, 2.77) to the hill, in search of his first win. The Lookouts will counter with a southpaw of their own, Onelki Garcia (0-2, 2.84).

Suns fans can listen to Monday's game on the Suns Baseball Network, 94.1 WSOS-FM, or through jaxsuns.com, MiLB.com or the Suns iPhone or Android app, beginning at 12:50 p.m. with the UF and Shands Suns Pre-Game Show.
