Sun Announces Multiple Initiatives to Raise Funds for Local Non-Profits Impacting Marginalized Communities

The Sun's first fundraising effort will be thru Freethrows for Change. Every freethrow made by the Sun during the 2020 season (regular season and postseason) will result in a $5 donation towards the overall effort via the Connecticut Sun Foundation. All freethrows made in the fourth quarter by the Sun during the season will double the donation to $10 each.

Additionally, following the season, the Sun will auction off game-worn and individually signed jerseys via the DASH app. All game jerseys feature Breonna Taylor's name under each respective Sun player name. The recognition of Taylor, who on March 13, was shot eight times and killed by police in her Kentucky home, is part of an overall effort by WNBA players to recognize women who have died due to alleged police brutality or racial injustice.

Finally, the Sun will sell Change Can't Wait t-shirts for $20, with net proceeds of $15 per shirt going to the overall fundraising effort. Shirts can be purchased online at ConnecticutSun.com.

"I couldn't be more proud of the commitment the Connecticut Sun organization has made to support Black lives," said point guard Jasmine Thomas. "Not only have they listened to and amplified our voices, they've now created a platform to work with us on social reform. The opportunities that the Change Can't Wait campaign will present makes me feel good to represent the Sun."

Following the 2020 campaign, Sun players will be consulted to provide direction on what organizations will receive the funds raised throughout the season.

The Sun tips off the 2020 WNBA season on Sunday, July 26 against the Minnesota Lynx at Noon on ESPN at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla.
