Successful Weekend Classic & Food Collection

March 26, 2019 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Wilson Tobs News Release

Wilson, NC - The Wilson Tobs 7th Annual High School Varsity Baseball Classic was another great success for the Tobs, as well as the local community. This event was highlighted with seven total games scheduled, three on Friday evening and four throughout the day on Saturday. Unfortunately, due to weather the first two games on Friday were postponed to a later date.

The Tobs continued their collection for their annual Home Run for Hunger program with the Varsity Baseball Classic. The Classic was the second collection event of the year and saw great success. Teams were not charged an entrance fee, but instead were asked to bring canned goods to support the cause. Fans that donated canned goods received a discount entry ticket into that day's games, a ticket for the Tobs Home Run for Hunger Celebration on Sunday, June 23rd , and a Free 6'' sub from Subway (Airport & Raleigh Rd locations).

Five different schools, and fans, donated over 100 canned goods each: Perquimans, JH Rose, Fike, DH Conley and West Johnson. The remainder of the collectors included. Nash Central, Cardinal Gibbons, Orange, and Hunt. In total 1,094 canned goods were collected throughout Friday and Saturday.

In baseball action, Friday's night game saw Nash Central come from behind in the final inning to defeat Perquimans in the first game of the Classic 4-3. The slate of games on Saturday lived up to the hype. The day started off with excitement as Cardinal Gibbons successfully took down JH Rose in a 4-3 thriller. In the second game of the day, Orange fell to Fike by a score of 6-0 backed by a strong pitching performance. DH Conley then took the field and left no doubt as they defeated West Johnston 16-2. The final matchup of the Classic saw Hunt pull out an entertaining 4-3 win against Perquimans to finish out the weekend's action.

The Tobs next Home Run for Hunger collection sites will be at the City of Wilson Soccer Opening Day, Saturday, March 30th at the Gillette Athletic Complex. Following that is the Wilson City Little League Opening Day, Saturday, April 6th, located at the Gillette Athletic Complex and the Tobs JV Baseball Classic Friday, April 5th and Saturday, April 6th at Historic Fleming Stadium. Teams and parents are encouraged to donate canned goods, as a competition has been created for the teams. The team with the most donated goods will receive a team prize courtesy of the Wilson Tobs.
