Gwinnett Stripers News Release

PAWTUCKET, RI - The Gwinnett Stripers were shut out for the first time in 2018 on Saturday night as they fell 6-0 to the Pawtucket Red Sox at McCoy Stadium.

PawSox left-hander Jalen Beeks allowed two hits over 6.0 innings, combining with three relievers on a three-hitter.

Left-hander Kolby Allard, making his third career Triple-A start, was greeted rudely by Pawtucket. Rusney Castillo singled to lead off the game and scored the decisive run one batter later as Ramon Flores tripled into the right field corner. Sam Travis followed with a single to shallow right, scoring Flores for a 2-0 lead.

Allard utilized a double play and a pickoff throw to third from catcher Chris Stewart to escape further damage in the first. The 20-year-old then settled in, holding Pawtucket hitless over the next four innings. Allard (L, 1-1) exited after 5.0 innings with two runs on four hits, three walks and five strikeouts.

The score stayed 2-0 until the eighth, when the PawSox scored four runs off lefty Phil Pfeifer to break the game open. Castillo doubled and scored on a wild pitch, Jeremy Barfield added a sacrifice fly and Jantzen Witte capped the scoring with a two-run double.

Beeks (W, 1-1) was nearly unhittable for Pawtucket as he allowed only a Stewart double in the second inning and a Carlos Franco single in the sixth inning. He lowered his season ERA to 0.64 as he struck out a season-high 10 and walked two.

Bobby Poyner (H, 1), Brandon Workman (H, 3) and Williams Jerez combined on 3.0 scoreless, one-hit innings for the PawSox.

Ronald Acuna Jr. went 1-for-4 with an infield single in addition to the hits by Stewart and Franco. Dustin Peterson went 0-for-3 to snap his seven-game hitting streak.

Castillo went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and a stolen base for Pawtucket.

The Stripers (5-8) and the PawSox (7-6) conclude the series on Sunday afternoon at McCoy Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 1:35 p.m. Atlanta Braves left-hander Luiz Gohara will make a rehab start for Gwinnett, while Pawtucket will counter with right-hander William Cuevas (1-0, 4.35 ERA). Dave Lezotte has the play-by-play call on 97.7 FM The Other Side of the River beginning at 1:05 p.m.

The Gwinnett Stripers return to Coolray Field on Friday, April 27 for a 7:05 p.m. game vs. the Durham Bulls. For tickets, call 678-277-0340 or visit GoStripers.com.
