Chicago Storm News Release
HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. (March 1, 2009) - Behind a magnificent and gutty effort in goal from Jeff Richey, the Chicago Storm knocked off the Detroit Ignition 6-4 at the Sears Centre on Sunday afternoon.
Richey made 21 saves despite hobbling throughout most of the game after a collision in the first quarter with a Detroit player. Then with 1:17 to go, with the Storm trying to fend off both a power play and Detroit's sixth attacker, he pulled a calf muscle and was helped to the locker room.
Defender Will Kletzien came on in goal, and the Storm (6-9) managed to protect him and came away with their second victory over the Ignition (7-6) in just over a week.
"To be injured the way he was and play the way he did, that was amazing," said Storm Head Coach Steve Morris. "We wouldn't be talking about a win right now if it wasn't for Jeff Richey."
The third quarter was decisive, following a 2-all halftime deadlock. Ian Bennett put the Storm on top just 54 seconds in, finishing high against Danny Waltman from the right wing. At the 2:05 mark, Dan Antoniuk scored his fourth goal in four games with the Storm to make it 6-2.
Meanwhile, Richey authored one acrobatic save after another, at least seven in the third quarter alone, to keep his team alive. Mike Apple scored on a restart to make it 6-4 early in the third, but that was all the Ignition would get.
The Storm continue their homestand at 3 p.m. next Sunday against the Milwaukee Wave. Call 1-866-STORM81 for more information or pick up your tickets at the Sears Centre box office.
