Stone Crabs Partner Annie Life to Join Grounds Crew
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - During the 2015 offseason, the Charlotte Stone Crabs were purchased by a group headed by Veteran Minor League owner Lou Schwechheimer. One of the members of the new ownership group, Annie Life, will be joining the Stone Crabs grounds crew for a three-game stretch, from June 13-15, when the Dunedin Blue Jays visit Charlotte Sports Park.
Annie began her baseball career with the Pawtucket Red Sox in 1979 before launching a distinguished career in the health care industry. To this day, Life is an active participant with the ALS Foundation, St. Jude's Hospital and Breast Cancer Awareness. She also volunteers at health care and day care facilities in Honduras. Starting next week, Annie will be able to add grounds crew member to her list of accomplishments.
"I've attended many baseball games over the years, most recently with the Stone Crabs, and I've always found the work ethic and attention to detail that the grounds crew need to have really intriguing," said Life who resides near Orlando, FL. "I thought, 'what better way to get involved with the team, the staff and the community than by becoming a member of the grounds crew for a few days!'"
Being a part of the grounds crew requires coming to the stadium very early in the day and being one of the last people to leave after the game. Among the duties of the grounds crew are spraying the base lines, setting up cages and nets for batting practice, pulling tarp and dragging the field during the game to name just a few. One of the biggest challenges facing Life and other members of the grounds crew will be the quick turnaround from Tuesday night's 6:35pm game to a 10:05am game on Wednesday morning.
"We all know that working in baseball involves long hours, dedication and passion for what you are doing," said Life. "It will be interesting to see how everyone responds to the work schedule between the time the game ends on Tuesday night to when the gates open at 9:00am the following day."
During her time with the grounds crew, Life will be posting periodic updates while the Stone Crabs staff will also be checking in with her throughout the day to see how she's doing. Make sure you follow the Stone Crabs on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for continuous updates throughout Annie's three days with the grounds crew.
The Stone Crabs ownership group, led by veteran Minor League Baseball team owner Lou Schwechheimer (International League Pawtucket Red Sox) includes baseball executives with over 200 years of experience in Major League and Minor League Baseball. Owners include Jordan Kobritz (of the Maine Guides in the International League and the Daytona Cubs in the Florida State League,) and Matt White, longtime executive with the International League Pawtucket Red Sox. The group also owns the controlling interest in the New Orleans Zephyrs in the Pacific Coast League.
